ishikawa xiii goemon

Age: Mid-20s - early 30s
Birthday: August 16 (The Castle of Cagliostro)
Height: 180 cm

Goemon is the thirteenth generation in a line of renegade samurai, starting with the legendary Ishikawa Goemon. He wields the Zantetsuken, an "iron-cutting sword" capable of slicing through almost anything. However, in one episode, he admitted his sword cannot cut konnyaku, a yam-based jelly, as the blade gets stuck in it. Typically, Goemon uses Zantetsuken on inanimate objects, which he considers unworthy, often muttering his catchphrase, "Once again, I have cut a worthless object." Objects cut by Zantetsuken fall apart after a few seconds. He is quieter and participates less frequently in Lupin's exploits compared to Jigen. Additionally, he is a skilled pilot. A master of various traditional Japanese martial arts, Goemon excels in Kenjutsu and Battōjutsu. With his Zantetsuken, he can cut through virtually any substance, including flying bullets, steel girders, cars, and multi-story buildings. His training includes Jujutsu, Aikido, and Karate, allowing him to defeat multiple attackers barehanded with minimal effort. Despite his powerful weapon and martial arts skills, Goemon prefers to incapacitate rather than kill opponents, usually by destroying their weapons and clothes with swift sword sweeps. Since katanas traditionally need to cut flesh before being sheathed, Goemon reacts to non-lethal use by saying, "Mata tsumaranu mono o kitte shimatta" ("Once again, I have cut an unworthy object"). Goemon has immense pride in his abilities and feels shame and remorse when he fails to accomplish a task. Breaking Zantetsuken, as he did in a battle with Flinch in The Mystery of Mamo, often leads to such feelings. He also feels chagrin when succumbing to weaknesses, like when a woman stole his sword in Memories of the Flame: Tokyo Crisis. In these situations, Goemon retreats to meditate or further train to eliminate his weaknesses. Goemon shows strong allegiance to Japanese culture despite his nomadic lifestyle. He dresses in a hakama and fundoshi and wears his hair long and unevenly cut. He only eats Japanese cuisine, even fasting if Western options are the only available choice. A firm believer in Buddhism and Shinto, he prefers sake over other drinks and occasionally smokes a kiseru. He usually wears a Sugegasa-style hat. While fearless in battle, Goemon becomes shy around attractive women. Seeing a scantily clad woman makes him blush and look away, even if he has romantic interest in her, such as Murasaki Suminawa, his fiancée in The Plot of the Fuma Clan. His most common pastime is meditation. Even under threat or while locked up, he remains seated in deep mental seclusion. Other activities he enjoys include fishing, attending noh theater, listening to enka jazz, and participating in martial arts competitions. Though usually aloof, Goemon sometimes shows frustration or admiration for beautiful women, rarely screaming in fright. These out-of-character moments are often played for humor. If Goemon has a true weakness, it is his susceptibility to women. He easily trusts seemingly trustworthy or innocent women, often landing himself in trouble. At the same time, he fears sultry women will distract him from his training and tends to blush or flee in immodest situations. Goemon is also terrible with money and falls for scams promising enlightenment. He frequently charges Lupin for his services. In $1 Money Wars, he gave money to the female leader of a cult, who promptly ran off with it. Although often considered just a samurai, an episode of the second TV series ("Goemon's Revenge") shows him visiting his Iga ninja sensei, revealing his ninja training. This might explain his willingness to engage in thievery despite his samurai background. (Source: Wikipedia, Lupin III Wiki)
