Daisuke Jigen is a skilled gunman often seen alongside Lupin during his adventures and heists. Despite disliking Lupin's attraction to women, Jigen remains a loyal and reliable marksman for Lupin until the end.
Jigen can perform a lightning-fast 0.3-second quick-draw and shoots with remarkable accuracy. He prefers wearing his hat low to cover his eyes, giving him an enigmatic look. His hat aids in aiming and target acquisition, crucial for his dead-shot precision. Proficient with various firearms, including machine guns, sniper rifles, and even an anti-tank rifle, Jigen is also a skilled driver and pilot.
In the original manga, Jigen isn't always at Lupin's side but waits in the background until needed. In contrast, the anime portrays him as extremely loyal to Lupin, ready to join any heist at any time.
Jigen has a quick temper, often reacting violently to insults from both friends and enemies. Both Lupin and Goemon have faced his wrath due to their candid or humorous criticisms.
Beneath his gruff exterior, Jigen has an ironic sense of humor and enjoys participating in each caper with his partners. He is the most pragmatic member of the group, with a cynical streak stemming from failed romances. Distrustful of Fujiko Mine, he becomes irritated when Lupin follows her plans. Among Lupin's gang, Jigen is least hesitant about taking human life, though he avoids harming women and children.
Jigen’s wardrobe is simple and classic: dark grey, dark green, or black business suits paired with white or light blue shirts, a black tie, and his signature dark grey or black broad-brimmed fedora. This hat is his most prized possession after his weapons. During the third anime series, his outfit is lighter, with a grid-patterned hatband, but the darker look prevails in OVA productions and TV specials. His thick, collar-length hair and unruly chin beard vary in length. While some episodes obscure his face with his hat or hair, most animated depictions show his face clearly.
Jigen acts as the "big brother" of the group, often serving as the voice of reason to Lupin's impulsiveness. Resigned to going along with even the wildest schemes, he excels in disguises and can pilot almost any motorized vehicle, including planes and tanks. He is also adept at hand-to-hand combat.
Jigen's past includes working as a bodyguard and assassin for American criminal mobs. One popular story suggests he was an American mobster who moved to Japan and adopted a Japanese identity. According to Lupin, Jigen's hobbies include target practice, visiting bars, playing poker, watching boxing matches, and dining at chop house-style restaurants. He enjoys Spaghetti Westerns, lounging, classical music, hearty American food, smoking, and drinking scotch, bourbon, vodka, beer, and fine wines.
Jigen's most notable habit is smoking; he is rarely seen without a cigarette, often bent in various directions. His preferred brands are Pall Mall Filter Longs or Marlboro Red. Occasionally, he smokes a briar pipe. Known for his resistance to intoxication, he drinks heavily without losing control.
The Tokyo Pop releases of the original Lupin III manga note that Jigen's appearance and temperament are inspired by actor James Coburn, especially his role as Britt in The Magnificent Seven. This was confirmed by Monkey Punch during a 2003 anime convention interview. The relationship between Jigen and Lupin is modeled after Alain Delon and Charles Bronson's dynamic in the 1968 film Adieu l'ami.
