Charizard is a dragon-like, bipedal Pokémon. It has an orange body with a cream-colored underside stretching from its chest to the tip of its tail. Its features include a long neck, small blue eyes, slightly raised nostrils, and two horn-like structures on the back of its rectangular head. When its mouth is closed, two fangs are visible in its upper jaw. Charizard sports large wings with blue-green undersides, each featuring a horn-like protrusion at the third joint. A single wing-finger is noticeable through the center of each wing membrane. Its arms are short and skinny compared to its robust belly, and each limb ends in three white claws. The legs are stocky, with cream-colored soles on each plantigrade foot. The tip of its long, tapering tail burns with a sizable flame that turns blue if Charizard is agitated.
Charizard flies in search of strong opponents to battle, and its fire grows hotter as it gains experience. Its fiery breath can melt rocks and glaciers, sometimes causing forest fires by accident. Despite its powerful breath, it never uses it on weaker foes. Typically, Charizard inhabits mountains and valleys like the Charicific Valley in Johto. The anime reveals that only a weak Charizard would flaunt its power and shows that Charizard can swim underwater, with Pokémon Origins confirming that the flame on its tail can continue burning underwater. Its wings enable it to reach altitudes of 4,600 feet (1,400 meters). Charizard lives in herds alongside Charmander.
Forms
Charizard has three alternate forms: Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, and Gigantamax Charizard.
Both Mega Evolutions feature a shorter snout, white vertical slit pupils, and a bright underside reaching the lower jaw.
Mega Charizard X
In this form, Charizard's body and legs become more muscular, though its arms remain thin. Its skin turns black with a sky-blue underside and soles. Two spikes with blue tips curve upward from the front and back of each shoulder, while its horns sharpen, turn blue, and curve slightly upward. Its brow and claws grow larger, and its eyes turn red. It has two small fin-like spikes under each horn and two more down its lower neck. The finger disappears from the wing membrane, and the lower edges divide into large, rounded points. The third joint of each wing-arm now has a claw-like spike. Mega Charizard X exhales blue flames from the sides of its mouth, and its tail flame consistently burns blue. This transformation supposedly turns it black and intensifies its flames.
Mega Charizard Y
This sleeker version retains Charizard's normal coloration but has three pointed horns on the back of its head, with the middle one being longer. Its snout has larger fangs and a ridge on the nose. Its neck is shorter, but its torso is thinner and longer. It now has longer digitigrade feet. Its hands are less developed, with extremely shortened fingers that are no longer separated. Small wings develop on its wrists, while the ones on its back become larger, lose their wing finger, and end up with ragged edges. The base of its tail has a large spike, and three smaller ones near the tip, which now burns with a longer flame. Mega Charizard Y reportedly has flying prowess surpassing a jet fighter.
Gigantamax
In this form, Charizard becomes larger and more muscular. The lower part of its body glows white with several yellow diamonds on the lower belly and diamond-shaped spots on the front legs. Its claws on hands and feet become longer and sharper. The feet lengthen and become digitigrade, retaining glowing soles under the forefeet. The sclerae of its eyes turn yellow. Flames glow inside its mouth, and its teeth grow, with some protruding when the mouth is closed. The flame on its tail extends out with three red clouds surrounding it. Two flames sprout from its horns, and its wings transform into literal flame wings extending to the shoulder blade. These colossal flamed wings, created from the energy of Gigantamaxing, are hotter than magma and used to burn opponents. The internal flames burn hotter than 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit (2,000 degrees Celsius) and increase in temperature when it roars.
Evolution
Charizard evolves from Charmeleon and is the final form of Charmander.
