Ling Yao is a character from Xing, exclusive to the manga and the 2009 anime series. With his father, the Emperor, in failing health, Ling ventures out of his country to find the Philosopher's Stone, hoping it will stabilize Xing and grant him immortality. As the 12th son of the Emperor, Ling aims to use the Philosopher's Stone to improve his standing in the line of succession and secure his clan’s future. Despite often appearing carefree and hungry, he displays noble qualities and will do whatever it takes to protect his clan. He is an adept fighter who has faced numerous assassination attempts.
Ling forms a strong rivalry with Ed, often annoying him by using his money. After the first Greed is punished by Father, he bestows upon Ling the secret to immortality by transforming him into the next Greed. Although Ed tries to help, Ling declines his assistance, seeing it as the only way to aid his clan in Xing. Even when his body is controlled by Greed, Ling’s mind and soul remain intact, allowing him to surface at times. Their relationship is symbiotic, with Greed understanding Ling’s strengths.
Following the main events of the series, Ling is shown to have become the new Emperor of Xing, sitting on the throne with Lan Fan continuing to serve as his bodyguard.
