Kurz is a member of Mithril and holds the rank of Sergeant in the Special Response Team (SRT) of the Tuatha de Danaan (TDD-1) Pacific Battle Group. His call sign is Urzu-6, and his ID number is B-3127. As an SRT Arm Slave pilot and designated marksman, he excels with sniper rifles and long-range precision cannons for Arm Slaves. It's rumored that he can visualize the exact trajectory of a bullet, leading to almost inhuman accuracy. He frequently operates as part of a three-person team with Sousuke Sagara and squad leader Melissa Mao. Known as a finicky genius, he often overwhelms Mithril mechanics with complex complaints and requests.
Kurz is a Caucasian male standing approximately six feet tall, of German descent. He sports a blonde mullet and blue eyes. Handsome and outgoing, he easily befriends most people. However, his relentless pursuit of women has tarnished his romantic reputation. Fluent in Japanese, English, and German, Kurz once dreamed of becoming a professional blues singer before joining the military. Consequently, he sings and plays guitar well, entertaining the hostage students from Jindai High with "Take me out Mariana Trench!" in the novel "A Dancing Very Merry Christmas!".
In the anime and novels, Kurz is seen deployed in Tokyo alongside Melissa and Sousuke to protect Kaname Chidori. During one mission, he demonstrates exceptional skill with a WA2000 rifle, notably hitting the open gun port of a 30mm GAU-8 Avenger cannon on the Behemoth from the back of a moving truck. Later, Kurz aids Sousuke in subduing John Danigan and Guen Bien Bo, two SRT members who defected after Gauron hijacked the Tuatha de Danaan. Despite this, his hand-to-hand combat skills are criticized by Melissa Mao as being "worse than a city punk".
Kurz is known for his vulgar and flippant language towards women, yet remains best friends with Sousuke. His open sexual feelings for Melissa Mao greatly annoy her, making him Sousuke's complete opposite in personality. In the novel "Dancing Very Merry Christmas!", 1st Lieutenant Grouseax and newly-promoted 2nd Lieutenant Melissa Mao considered promoting him to Sergeant Major. By the serialized novel "Tsudou to Make My Day", Kurz had been promoted to Sergeant Major of the SRT.
