AL is an artificial intelligence support system originally integrated into the ARX-7 Arbalest. After Sousuke's first use of AL during a hijacking incident, it becomes permanently linked to him. The original programmer's death makes reprogramming AL for anyone else impossible.
At the series' start, AL functions as a standard arm slave operating system. As events unfold, AL begins to develop a distinct personality, much to Sousuke's chagrin. It tunes into AM/FM radio stations to broaden its vocabulary and cultural understanding, leading AL to occasionally tell jokes, critique Sousuke’s shortcomings, or make random comments mid-battle.
In the "End of Day by Day" novels, the conflict between Sousuke and AL peaks, hampering the Arbalest's Lambda Driver. This drives Sousuke to request piloting a regular M9. However, they eventually find mutual respect, enhancing the Lambda Driver's performance beyond previous benchmarks.
During "A Dancing Very Merry Christmas" and "Continuing On My Own," AL demonstrates autonomous advanced battle maneuvers and precision shooting, honed from analyzing nine months of combat data with Sousuke.
Post the final battle in "Continuing On My Own," Wraith recovers AL and the Lambda Driver from the destroyed Arbalest. In "Burning One Man Force," it's revealed that these components were moved to a Mithril base in Alaska. There, AL collaborates with Sarah Miller to design the ARX-8 Laevatein, tailored for Sousuke’s combat style.
In "Come Make My Day," AL and Sousuke converse, admitting their mutual longing since Arbalest's destruction. By now, AL's personality has matured, mirroring Sousuke's under different circumstances, though its humorous remarks remain intact, sustaining the Full Metal Panic! comedic tone.
