Kaname is the primary female protagonist and initially seems like an ordinary high school student. The character was inspired by a friend of the authors, also named Kaname Chidori, who resides in Japan. However, her Whispered abilities draw the attention of terrorist groups. Consequently, Sousuke has been tasked by Mithril to safeguard her. While Sousuke Sagara's combat instincts typically rescue her from perilous situations, she often finds his instincts annoying during everyday school life, leading to numerous comedic moments.
Despite this, she and Sousuke gradually become closer and have even expressed their feelings for one another. Kaname's Whispered abilities provide her with intrinsic knowledge, though not necessarily understanding, of advanced mathematics and science. Unsurprisingly, she consistently earns top grades in these subjects. However, her Whispered capabilities are somewhat erratic. She is unaware of her full potential and sometimes enters a near-trance state where she comprehends Black Technology completely.
At a certain point in the series, it becomes clear to Kaname that she has feelings for Sousuke, but that doesn't stop her from hitting him with her Harisen when he frustrates her. Kaname has a short temper, especially when dealing with Sousuke's antics. Kurz Weber humorously commented on her anger once, saying, "What happened to my angel?" Many of Sousuke's actions tend to provoke Kaname into fits of rage, resulting in either hitting or scolding him. Nonetheless, she has a soft spot for him and will often cook for him or give him compliments when he does well.
