Kanami owns a roadside restaurant named Chigusa. Kanami's mother dies from anemia and turns into a Shiki. She returns to Kanami's house, but in her weakened state, she cannot kill or sustain herself. To prevent her mother from harming innocent people, Kanami feeds her glasses of her own blood. Kanami's friend and co-worker, Maeda Motoko, discovers this secret and vows to keep it hidden. However, Motoko grows envious of Kanami for having her mother back, especially since Motoko's entire family was killed by her father-in-law who had become a Shiki. Motoko betrays Kanami's trust and tells the villagers, leading them to break into Kanami's house and kill her mother. Following this tragic event, Kanami is seen leaving the village as the Shiki extermination continues.
