curtis izumi

Izumi Curtis, originally named Izumi Harnet, was the teacher of Ed and Alphonse Elric. She agreed to train the brothers to refine their alchemical skills following their mother's death. Her training program included philosophy, martial arts, and living off the land. These methods were inspired by her own alchemy training; in the manga and second anime, she had to survive for a month in the northern region near Briggs Fortress (though it was later revealed she succeeded by stealing supplies from the fortress). In the first anime, she was trained by Dante. Izumi considers the Elrics as her own sons. Although she severed her student-teacher relationship with them upon learning about their human transmutation attempts (and Ed joining the State Military), she continued to support them in any way possible. She can be quite violent when disciplining or sparring with the Elric brothers, which makes them fear her deeply. One of Arakawa's favorite scenes to draw was when Izumi declared, "I'm a housewife!" while confronting Greed. Years before the series began, Izumi and her husband Sig Curtis were expecting a child, but their son was stillborn. Izumi attempted to revive him through human transmutation, which failed and resulted in the loss of some of her internal organs, leading to infertility and periodic coughing up of blood. This act also granted her the ability to perform alchemy without a transmutation circle after witnessing "the truth." In the manga, Izumi drew the attention of the State Military due to surviving the failed human transmutation. As she and Sig traveled around Amestris to evade the military, they eventually met Ed and Al's father, Hohenheim. He adjusted her insides to improve her blood flow and convinced her to collaborate in bringing down the State Military.
