Hourin was the kirin of the kingdom of Hou during the reign of Chuutatsu, the father of Shoukei. Chuutatsu is the second king she had chosen. As the king grew increasingly obsessed with implementing harsh laws in the hope of making his people righteous, Hourin pleaded with him to be more lenient. However, her efforts only reinforced his belief that even stricter measures were necessary. When Hourin contracted shitsudou, Chuutatsu failed to recognize that he had lost the mandate and continued to punish his people ruthlessly. The ailing Hourin was eventually confined in the Inner Palace along with Chuutatsu's wife, Kaka, and his daughter, Shoukei. When Gekkei, the governor of the province of Kei, led a rebellion to overthrow Chuutatsu, he reached the Inner Palace with his supporters, alarmed by the severity of Hourin's shitsudou. Facing demands for retribution from Gekkei's supporters, who blamed Hourin for choosing two inadequate kings, Hourin willingly submitted to execution. (Source: wikia)
