Captain Ginyu is the leader of an elite mercenary squad known as the Ginyu Force. His name is a pun on "gyuunyuu," the Japanese word for milk.
Captain Ginyu demonstrates deep concern for his teammates, becoming extremely angry upon learning from Jeice that his three other subordinates were defeated and killed. However, he can also be quite stern with his team members if they fail a mission, as seen when he harshly reprimands Jeice for allowing Burter and Recoome to lose to Goku and then fleeing from the fight. He shows great loyalty to Frieza and follows every order given by him.
During his battle with Goku, Frieza remarked that he did not believe anyone in the universe had surpassed Ginyu's strength.
Only a few individuals have seen Ginyu's true form, with Salza being one of them. Salza had to defeat Ginyu in combat to become the leader of Cooler's Armored Squadron.
