An arrogant, selfish, and enigmatic Archer-class Servant. He seems familiar with Fuyuki City and claims a past connection with Saber. Usually dressed in ornate golden armor, he wields an immense number of Noble Phantasms, none revealing his true identity.
Gilgamesh is the legendary half-god, half-human king born from King Lugalbanda of Uruk and goddess Rimat-Ninsun. He ruled ancient Mesopotamia's Sumerian city-state of Uruk during the B.C. era. Two-thirds god and one-third human, Gilgamesh was unmatched, believing himself invincible. Not just a legend, he reportedly existed and reigned five thousand years ago during the Sumer Dynasty. The King of Heroes who possessed all worldly treasures, his tale is chronicled in humanity's oldest epic poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh. This portrays Gilgamesh as a destined hero-king achieving great feats alongside his best friend Enkidu.
His title, King of Heroes, signifies he rules over all heroes, not being a heroic king. As humanity's first hero, source of myths, and model for heroes, his story permeates global mythologies. Various mythical heroes derive from his legend, so his Gate of Babylon contains their Noble Phantasms. While other "Kings" exist, like King of Knights and King of Conquerors, only he bears the title "King of All Heroes."
Initially summoned by Tokiomi Toosaka in the Fourth Holy Grail War using a snake's shed skin fossil, after Toosaka's death, Gilgamesh allied with Kirei Kotomine to obtain the Holy Grail, intending to cleanse corrupted humanity. Kiritsugu Emiya killed his Master, leaving Gilgamesh drenched in tainted Holy Grail ichor. Though it usually corrupts Servants, Gilgamesh resisted, becoming corporeal and more eccentric.
Noble Phantasms:
- Gate of Babylon: A plain sword doubling as a spatial key to access a vault in ancient Babylon containing numerous Noble Phantasms from Uruk's peak civilization. Gilgamesh throws or fires these weapons like rockets.
Several Noble Phantasms are crucial:
- Merodach: An unadorned but powerful Noble Phantasm exceeding Gram or Caliburn.
- Durendal: A gleaming holy sword enchanted by three miracles, remaining sharp even without Mana. Legends call it indestructible.
- Enkidu: A chain forged to immobilize gods, less effective against non-divine foes.
- Ea (Enuma Elish): A black pillar-shaped sword with crimson cuneiform letters. Its tri-blade rotation vacuums and compresses atmospheric gases, releasing a cataclysmic blast disintegrating reality. It surpasses Excalibur and cannot be replicated.
- Vimana: A mythical self-moving aerial car, sometimes serving as a seat or throne, capable of flight.
In Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA, he's sealed into the eighth Class Card, manifesting as his younger self due to Illya separating him from his shadow form. Initially an adversary, he becomes an ally to fulfill his objectives. Child-form Gilgamesh has a more easygoing attitude, asking Illya to call him Gil-kun.
