Gildarts Clive is one of the Fairy Tail Guild's S-Class mages, widely recognized by all members as the strongest under Makarov. Whether he rivals Makarov in power remains a topic of debate. Gildarts is often absent from the guild due to the nature of his missions. He is commonly referred to as "that geezer" by fellow guild members. His back bears an image of a man with spiky hair wearing a tattered cloak. The Phantom Lord Guild Master, Jose Porla, noted Gildarts' fame: "... Erza and Laxus, Mystogan and Gildarts... Their names spread as far as my own hometown..." Gildarts left the guild three years ago for a mission and has recently returned. Rumors suggest he took on both a 10-year job and a 100-year job, which are classified above SS rank due to their completion time. His prolonged absences may explain why Makarov excluded him from succession plans and why no contact was made during the Phantom-Fairy Tail War. Gildarts appears to be a beloved and significant figure in town. A large bell is rung in a "special manner" to announce his arrival. Upon his return, Fairy Tail mages celebrate enthusiastically, indicating his popularity contrasts sharply with Mystogan's anonymity and Laxus' unpopularity. Gildarts is Cana Alberona's father, initially known only to her. She eventually reveals this to him, leading Gildarts to develop a deep love and protective instinct towards her as his daughter.
