Gajeel is an imposing young man, roughly the same age as Natsu Dragneel. His appearance is striking with a wing-like sleeve on his right arm, positioned just above his Phantom Lord tattoo, and numerous body piercings typically arranged in sets of three or five. His typical attire includes a rugged black tunic adorned with studs, studded wristbands, and studded boots, giving off a punk vibe. His hairstyle is reminiscent of heavy metal, featuring long, black hair.

He appears indifferent to Fairy Tail, believing that Phantom Lord is a more powerful and valuable guild. Gajeel's Phantom Lord emblem is displayed prominently at the top of his right shoulder, mirroring where Natsu has his Fairy Tail mark. Contrasting sharply with Natsu’s light-hearted demeanor, Gajeel exudes a darker personality and appearance. However, he possesses a short temper, often ignited by Natsu Dragneel’s provocations.

Despite claiming he doesn't seek friendships, Gajeel makes efforts in his unique way. For instance, he sang a tuneless solo after chaining Mirajane to a wall and refrained from retaliating when attacked by Shadow Gear or Laxus. He even shielded Levy McGarden from one of Laxus Dreyar's lightning blasts, proving Jet and Droy wrong about his character and demonstrating his desire to connect with other Fairy Tail members.

Beneath his cold exterior, Gajeel reveals a humorous side, like when shocked by Mirajane's face-changing magic to resemble him or failing to break Fried’s enchantment. At the conclusion of the Oracion Seis arc, he felt disheartened upon realizing he was the sole Dragon Slayer without a cat companion. Desperately searching alleyways for a cat left him famished and exhausted.

In Edolas, he battles Pantherlily, declaring his intention to make Pantherlily his cat after defeating him. Upon returning to Earthland with all the Exceeds, Pantherlily chose to stay with Fairy Tail, becoming Gajeel’s companion.
