Envy is a homunculus with the unique ability to shape-shift, allowing them to assume the form of any person and even mimic their voice. This power makes Envy an excellent spy and assassin. While not as intelligent as some other homunculi, Envy is far from stupid and can manipulate others just as skillfully as Lust. However, their arrogance and short temper often lead to mistakes, especially when someone insults their fragile ego. In the 2003 anime series, Envy is the oldest homunculus and has forgotten their original appearance. They harbor a deep hatred for all humans and follow Dante primarily for the chance to kill as many people as possible. Unlike other homunculi, Envy shows no interest in the Philosopher's Stone or becoming human. It is later revealed that Envy was created 400 years ago by Hohenheim in an attempt to resurrect his son with Dante, who died from mercury poisoning at age eighteen. Envy harbors intense resentment towards Hohenheim for never acknowledging him as his son and for abandoning both him and Dante. In the manga and the 2009 anime series, Envy is the fourth homunculus created by Father. Although often referred to as "he," Envy is actually genderless and can take almost any form they desire. Described by Lust as the cruelest and most sadistic of the homunculi, Envy openly despises humans and takes pleasure in hurting, humiliating, or insulting them.
