He takes pride in his "insanity insects," which cause people to lose their memories after being bitten. Dr. Mamushi's name refers to the Japanese mamushi (Gloydius blomhoffii), a venomous pit viper. Along with the Okinawan habu (Trimeresurus flavoviridis), these snakes are considered the most poisonous and deadliest in Japan, where up to 3000 people die from mamushi bites annually. His original name, Dr. Semushi, derives from the Japanese word for "hunchback," reflecting his physical appearance, similar to how other doctors' names describe theirs. However, due to the term being considered offensive to people with disabilities, later reprints changed it to "Mamushi."
