Albert originally hailed from Germany. He and his fiancée Hilda tried to escape to West Berlin disguised as circus members. Albert drove a truck with an animal cage, while Hilda dressed in a lioness costume and stayed in the cage with a real lion. This scenario is depicted in the manga; however, in the 1980 movie and the 2001 series, Hilda was Albert's co-pilot. Their escape attempt went awry when Albert forgot to retrieve his forged identification from a guard. Panicking, he sped off. Border guards fired at the truck, injuring Albert and fatally shooting Hilda. Black Ghost agents arrived, deceiving Albert by claiming they would take him to a hospital. In the 2001 series, upon regaining consciousness as a cyborg, Albert was overwhelmed with despair and developed suicidal tendencies. These feelings were exacerbated by the physical pain and strain caused by his modifications. Consequently, Black Ghost was compelled to suspend the cyborg program for decades and place existing cyborgs in suspended animation until advancements in technology could ensure more stable cyborg soldiers in the future.
