Bak Chang is a 29-year-old Chinese descendant of a German wizard and one of the founders of the Black Order. He currently leads the Black Order's Asia Branch, a position previously held by his great-grandfather.
Like Komui, Bak is fully aware of his responsibilities and strictly adheres to God's will. His bloodline and his great-grandfather's seal grant him the ability to manipulate the structure of buildings using spells. As the branch director, he appears cold and highly responsible, but he genuinely cares for others. Nine years ago, both the Chang and Epstein families were coerced into participating in the Synthetic Disciple Project, which resulted in the creation of Second Exorcists. Feeling deeply remorseful over Kanda's creation through this project, Bak worries that the development of Third Exorcists might upset Kanda. He also shares a close bond with Fo.
It is likely that Bak is related to Edgar Chang, the former assistant head of the Asia Branch, and Twi Chang, the former head. Recent chapters (189-193) detailing Kanda's past reveal that Edgar had a child with Twi, making him a father. Edgar may have served as a father figure to both Alma and Kanda. Tragically, Edgar was later killed by Alma. Twi's fate remains uncertain but it is presumed that she too was killed by Alma.
At the age of 20, Bak met Kanda briefly along with Noise Marie. Bak has an infatuation with Lenalee, evidenced by a folder of photos he carries. When confronted (and later blackmailed) about it by Allen, he broke out in hives.
