In Gundam SEED, Athrun Zala is part of the elite Le Creuset team that attacks Heliopolis. He becomes the pilot of the captured Aegis Gundam. As a child, Athrun attended a preparatory school on the moon where he befriended Kira Yamato. With his father leading a warlike faction of the PLANT Supreme Council and his mother killed in the "Bloody Valentine" tragedy, Athrun is determined to defeat the Earth Alliance. He is shocked to discover that Kira is fighting for the enemy. Athrun has a talent for mechanical tinkering and has created several robot pets for friends and acquaintances.
In Gundam SEED Destiny, Athrun takes up residence in Orb under the alias Alex Dino, serving as Cagalli's aide and bodyguard. During a visit to Armory One with Cagalli, he gets drawn into a new conflict. Following the fall of Junius Seven and the outbreak of full-scale war, Athrun discards his false identity and returns to battle.
Athrun excels in piloting various mobile suits. When piloting a standard ZAKU Warrior, he demonstrates immense skill and bravery. Chairman Durandal provides him with the Saviour Gundam due to his exceptional abilities. Athrun combines power, speed, and skill effectively in combat but struggles against more experienced pilots like those from the Earth Alliance. Despite improvements, his combat skills are not on par with Kira Yamato's. After his Saviour is destroyed by Freedom, Athrun acquires the Infinite Justice and fights alongside Kira's Strike Freedom.
