Ascot is a Palu, a young boy with the unique ability to summon monsters, whom he regards as his friends. Despite their grotesque appearances, these monsters bear no ill intentions, but the villagers still fear them. Consequently, Ascot was ostracized until Zagato offered him and his monstrous companions a home in exchange for his loyalty. In the anime, he destroys Presea's house with his monsters, leading to her death; later, he confronts the Knights again (their first encounter in the manga), but Umi slaps him for using his friends and causing them pain. This act triggers a change of heart in Ascot, prompting him to abandon Zagato.
In the second series, Ascot uses the power of his will to transform himself into an adult due to his love for Umi. Although he still summons monsters, he has learned other spells from Clef to avoid using his friends as living weapons. In the anime, he confesses his feelings to Umi before she leaves to fight Tarta. Umi responds that she loves him too, but only as much as everyone else in Cephiro, and she does not have romantic feelings for him. This revelation saddens Ascot, but he continues to try to win her heart.
