Hikaru is one of the three Magic Knights summoned to Cephiro by Princess Emeraude; she is the knight of fire (as her name implies, "Hikaru" means "Light of the Lion Shrine"). She is the smallest of the three knights and is often mistaken for an elementary school student. Her classmates consider her a bit tomboyish. Despite her small stature and apparent naivety, she can be quite fierce and strong when needed. Underneath her ever-present smiles and innocence lies the spirit of a warrior determined to protect her friends and everyone's happiness, even at the cost of her own well-being.
As the series progresses, Hikaru is the most affected—both physically and mentally—by the brutality and war around her. Nevertheless, she maintains a strong facade, trying not to worry Umi and Fuu, whom she considers her most precious friends, despite only meeting them moments before being dragged into Cephiro.
When the true reasons for their summoning are revealed, and Hikaru is forced to act with Umi and Fuu to kill both Zagato and a grief-stricken Emeraude, her heart overflows with pain and self-hate. Unwittingly, she creates a shadow—Nova—across the surface of Cephiro before being transported back to Earth.
During the second season, Hikaru must battle her other self, Nova, who is vengeful and maliciously possessive, causing more heartache and troubles. Additionally, she grapples with her growing feelings for Kail Lantis.
Initially, Hikaru approaches Lantis, feeling guilty for the death of his brother, and begs him to hate only her, to hit only her, but not to hurt Umi or Fuu. The moment Lantis tells her that she shouldn't blame herself, as it wasn't her fault but destiny, is likely when she starts falling for him, though unknowingly.
Throughout the second season, circumstances bring her and Lantis together many times. It isn't until Nova points out that Hikaru is very much in love with Lantis that she realizes it herself.
After a grueling battle to reforge the sword that Nova managed to break, Hikaru emerges victorious. On the verge of blacking out in Lantis's arms, she confesses her love for him. Although she doesn’t remember this after waking up, the feelings remain alive in her heart, and Nova exploits them repeatedly.
Despite the animosity between Cephiro and the three invading countries, Hikaru manages to befriend Eagle Vision of Autozam, making Eagle a bridge between both sides.
At one point in the anime, both Hikaru and Eagle become candidates for the Pillar position, but Hikaru is ultimately chosen. She makes a wish to rid Cephiro of its oppressive system, wishing for Cephiro to be created by all those who love it.
In the manga, Hikaru's feelings for Lantis are less mature, and she likes both Lantis and Eagle Vision. When Lantis asks her in the final chapter who she wants to marry, she answers that she wants to marry both him and Eagle. The bond between Hikaru and Eagle Vision is stronger in the manga because she fought with him for the position of the Pillar, defeated him, and then saved his life against the will of the Creator.
