In the Republic of Hanshin, Sorata is a cheerful history teacher married to Arashi. He welcomes Syaoran's group when they first arrive. In the apocalyptic world of Tokyo, he is one of the seven fighters in the Tower faction.

A dragon of heaven, Sorata is an upbeat and irreverent teenager with significant occult abilities. Raised by the Shingon Buddhist monks of Kōyasan after being separated from his mother at a young age, he has a penchant for food, often getting into trouble at the shrine for stealing snacks between meals, claiming he couldn't wait until dinner. He is also a skilled cook. A prophecy foretold that he would protect Kamui with his life but would die for a woman; upon meeting Arashi, he decided she would be that woman. Despite their initial coldness and his unrefined Kansai dialect, his relentlessly friendly nature eventually wins over both Kamui and Arashi.
Sorata can generate powerful electrical discharges and summon a gohōdōji, a magical entity similar to a shikigami that appears as a massive, grotesque ghostly creature. This being is psychically linked to Sorata, allowing him to observe others and act remotely, though he feels any damage inflicted on it.
