Arale is a robot created by Senbei Norimaki, designed to resemble a little girl. She is characterized by her naivety, boundless energy, lack of common sense, and extraordinary strength. Her abilities include the earth-splitting Chikyūwari (Earth Chop) and the powerful Nchahou (N'cha Cannon). Arale is nearsighted and requires glasses. Senbei's goal is to convince the residents of Penguin Village that Arale is just an ordinary human girl, which seems to work despite her superhuman athletic capabilities.
In the original manga and anime series, Arale has long bluish-purple hair, but in the 1997 Dr. Slump anime, her hair is dark brown. Her name is a playful pun, as "arare" refers to a type of bite-sized rice cracker, and with the family name "Norimaki," it alludes to arare wrapped in nori seaweed.
