Alma Karma, also known as the "first womb," is the individual responsible for the birth of the Third Exorcists. In the present day, Alma appears quite disfigured, likely due to his life-or-death battle with Yuu Kanda prior to the events of D.Gray-Man. He looks like a young man with extensive scars running down the left side of his face and body. His hair is long, reaching his legs, and he has an inverted triangle marking on his stomach. As a boy, Alma was the first of the Second Generation Exorcists to awaken, with Yuu following shortly after. They were repeatedly forced to attempt bonding with Innocence, each time being torn apart but surviving thanks to their regenerative abilities. Alma would greet all the unawakened Exorcists as part of his daily routine. When Alma learns that Yuu will be put into a coma, he knocks out Yuu's attendants and carries him away, unwilling to lose his only "friend." However, upon entering a sewer system, they are caught by Crow agents. Before Crow can fully restrain them using talismans, Alma kicks Yuu over the edge into the canal, telling him, "if (he's) lucky (he) might get outside," before Crow knocks him out. After Yuu is recaptured, Alma breaks free from his restraints and tries to rescue Yuu, eventually falling into a room containing several corpse cocoons. When Crow catches up and attacks, Alma grows a blade from his right arm and kills them, slicing open the cocoons and revealing the bodies of other "Second Exorcists." Road, who was not part of the memory world along with Allen, explains the truth about the project, leaving Alma in tears at the chapter's end. Alma murders the previous head of the Asian Branch Sixth Institute upon learning the truth about the Second Exorcist program. When Yuu sees the massacre, Alma stabs him, asking him to join him in death to end their suffering as "Second Exorcists" and to teach the Black Order a lesson about using them as tools. Yuu learns that Alma committed the murders to protect someone he loved. However, Yuu stands up and slashes Alma in half with his bonded Innocence, desiring to live to see that person again, even if it means killing his best friend. Following the Noah Family's invasion of the American branch headquarters, Cyril Kamelot uses his powers to animate Alma's body to attack Allen Walker. Wisely later reveals Alma and Yuu Kanda's history through his Demon Eye to Allen and Road Kamelot. Alma Karma awakens after Allen Walker, Road, and Yuu Kanda escape from Wisely's Demon Eye powers. Alma is seen inside a massive entity attacking everyone. The entity then drops Alma, who returns to Headquarters in his new form. Unlike the other Third Exorcists, Alma resembles an Akuma, specifically a Level 4, with an armored outer shell and patterns on his body. Instead of a halo, he has a disk floating above his head. Alma possesses the ability to transform any part of his body into a weapon laced with Innocence, making his entire body an anti-Akuma weapon. It remains unclear whether this is a type of parasitic Innocence or something entirely different. Due to his unstable personality, Alma cannot fully control his powers. Later, with his cursed eye, Allen discovers that Alma's soul belongs to the woman Yuu Kanda swore to find. Before Alma dies, Allen uses the Ark to transport Kanda and Alma to Mater City, where they fought together for the first time, allowing them to be together one last time. Alma ultimately dies in Kanda's arms.
