Neon Genesis Evangelion Chapter 44 Discussion

Kaji is really the tragic character in the series. His conversation with Shinji also highlights the fact that each of our protagonists is on the same boat really. Everyone has their own motives, and Shinji is no different.

Pretty convenient that the dummy plug was working damn well when it had to attack Toji but now its rejecting Unit 01. Or maybe it has something to do with Shinji and I've forgotten it..



This is also a bit of a turning point for Asuka. Being beaten so comprehensively by the angel wouldn't sit well with the massive (but fragile nonetheless) confidence of the red haired German girl.

Damn fine chapter. The stuff between Kaji and Shinji was really well done. Shinji was hit with the very hard truth that it was as much his fault as his father's that Toji died. He may have been able to save his friend if not for his inability to take action. Kaji drawing a parallel between Shinji, Misato, and himself saying they are not deserving to live happily as if nothing happened is probably one of my favorite pieces of dialogue yet.



I am very very happy with how this manga is handling his character. I thought he was somewhat misused in the anime, so it is great to see him fully fleshed out and utilized well here.



Meanwhile, Asuka has been taken out of the fight. Still she is in one piece, unlike 02 itself. Her discontent and frustration with how things turned out is palpable. It will be very interesting how her character arc is handled from here. Suffice to say I have a very high opinion of it in the anime version.

My favorite chapter yet. It's great how the story draws perfect parallels between Kaji and Misato, makes their relationship even better. He was my favorite character in the series, but this might make him one of my favorites in manga

So far every character in the series is putting on some form of mask to hide their trauma, from Asuka to Kaji

More Kaji flashback. The manga is doing a much better job as portraying his character, and i'm happy about that.



And that angel owned Asuka there.

More and more backstory to Kaji, really interesting.

                        This chapter provides so much clarification for both Kaji and Misato, though I disagree with some of the things that he said to Shinji.
