Neon Genesis Evangelion Chapter 19 Discussion

My favorite scene from the anime hits just as hard here. I really liked Shinji's little monologue at the end

Judging from your picture, I imagine that you are a huge Rei fan.  While I personally don’t really like Rei, I will admit that this is a great moment for her and one of the most powerful moments in Neon Genesis Evangelion.  That smile is amazing.

They defeated the angel, but the most important parts of the chapter are undoubtedly the moments between Shinji and Rei. Loved how the panels transitioned from Rei having her eyes closed to smiling. Shinji's comment about them having only the Eva project now but someday being glad they survive is something...unexpected from him if you are familiar with the anime.

It's not that the character is "better" in any version. Sadamoto said in the omnibus interview that "his" Shinji is influenced by him just like anime shinji is influenced by Anno. So, it's really just up to who you find more interesting I suppose. I like both, at this point.



Anyway, it should be about time for "her" to show up.

Much better than the previous chapter

Great ending to the third volume. (and first omnibus. And end of the first Rebuild movie)  Great chapter, with the destruction of the angel and Rei actually smiling. And a great ShinjixRei moment, for those that support that couple. I assume the words in the boxes in the last few pages came from Shinji, which really shows his manga version is a lot better than in the anime.

One of my fav moments in Evangelion.

The Rei and Shinji moments were particularly brilliant. As for the ending monologue, good to see that Shinji is actually optimistic for once.



Regarding Shinji in the manga vs Shinji in the anime, its all personal preference. One can argue Shinji in the manga has a bit more to him, as seen by the tad bit of optimism in his words at the final panel (something probably not present in the anime iirc).

He is probably a little less depressing in the manga. He definitely has his comic moments as well, which makes him more of a human I guess.

Tl;dr I personally prefer Shinji in the manga, simply because he seems a bit more human in my eyes.
