I Was Mistaken as a Monstrous Genius Actor Chapter 380 Discussion

  • #1
disclaimer: its been well over half a year since I read, so take with a grain of salt.

extremely good at first, I was practically addicted. But slowly the shine started to wear off and the novel became more and more painful to read over time. It felt like the MC never had to go through any challenges, he was picking up too many unnecessary skills, his real personality was coming out way less often and characters I didn't necessarily care about (the ones from Hollywood mostly) started popping out of the woodworks in droves. Characters that I was actually interested in would be mentioned, built up, and then would literally never come into the picture again. Spoiler

i remember spending I think over a hundred chapters reading nonstop, eager to get to the good bit where the exorcist girl (who showed signs of noticing the discrepancy between his real self and his concept) and the theatre troop kid (who was said to have the potential to at least fight back against woojin's monstorous acting) actually stole the show, but they ended up having extremely minor roles and basically played no part at all. Remove them from the story and everything stays the same.

every time I thought his concept would be challenged in any way, the situation resolved itself so quickly to the point where it wasnt even entertaining anymore. Plus the movies weren't even as interesting to read about as they used to be! Like half the reason I started reading was to learn about all the different movie settings/ worlds there were to explore and characters he could play, but the original stories and descriptions about his acting became less detailed and lowered in quality, pushed to the side for the sake of his brand deals or his yt channel or cooking variety tv show or his singing collabs with miley cyrus or his voice acting (iirc that bit was actually good ngl) I still loved the eerie sacrifice of a stranger and island of the lost but I feel like the latter wasn't as good as it could've been and the former was probably the last film in this book I enjoyed truly reading about. The action movie segment literally just had me reminiscing on the good old days of 'the exorcist', 'boyfriend' and 'drug dealer'. I feel like once a certain point was reached my satisfaction with the story was inversely proportional to the amount of fame he got. All the stuff about Hollywood especially just felt so bland to me, and yet that was what the story became increasingly focused on.

The straw that broke the camels back though: I noticed that the author uses real life films in his work, at minimum as inspiration, and it's really interesting to see (Spoiler

like when they pit the movies in the book against actual real life box office records

[collapse]) but when I realised that the MC was playing the joker, turning down Jurassic park movies and dating Miley Cyrus I physically could not keep reading. My suspension of disbelief, which weakened over time as I read, had been thoroughly shattered by the increasingly outlandish things that were happening. Its not that big a deal on its own, but combined with all my other growing issues with the book I had become disillusioned. Which is crazy because for the last few weeks prior I had been singing my praises of this web novel to anyone who would listen! My sister started wondering when I had finished reading because I stopped talking about it so abruptly.

(i did not like miley cara at all tbh, she was ok and likeable enough but I always felt like she didnt need to be there and everytime she came up id just think of miley cyrus lol, which made the whole thing seem more and more outlandish. The worst part is that I mtl'd most of the chapters and like 70% of the time they'd translate cara and cyrus, so I literally couldnt tell whether she was supposed to be the real miley cyrus or not. This is probably just a me problem and everyone else can see her as a completely separate character, and if so this bit of my review holds no weight and nobody should pay much attention to it haha. Its just a personal gripe I had. If its really miley cyrus then that's so incredibly dumb I can't believe it. Also hwalin for the win, she was robbed ╥﹏╥).

I have been talking only negatives in this review, but that's not to say this isn't an enjoyable read - my god is it an enjoyable read. Its just so fun! Especially in the first 200 chapters or so, but even later! Sometimes when im doing the dishes or on my way to school, I think about Spoiler

the time he played howl's moving castle for the va's child or when he used sign language on stage to talk to a deaf child fan and it brings a genuine smile to my face. The exorcist movie screening where his real life friends' jaws' drop at his incredible talent, the inadvertently funny profiler hanryang after filming talk show, the time when he is cast as an extra and his acting has gotten so good that even without the system/script/cheats his smile looks so genuine that the cast is floored, the glimpses of his relationship with his parents and sister.

[collapse] Its all just so good! I feel like these things get less focus the further in you read, but still.

Also, the misunderstandings are very, very funny (for 90% of the novel) as well: Spoiler

he might have one conversation in English and suddenly you have people in the upper echelons of the entertainment sphere talking about the multiple foreign countries he must've grown up in or his extensive background at multiple acting academies abroad (spoiler alert = he was a korean graphic designer until 5 months ago who had never been outside the country!).

[collapse] he'll say 'i dont want a bafta' and half the country will think he set his sights on the oscars instead because "a bafta is not good enough" to quench his ambition. Its amazing how the stuff he says just keeps snowballing into a misunderstanding of gargantuan proportions that makes him look cooler and cooler.

idk how to describe why I like it so much, just keep reading even if it the story doesn't capture you at first and you might just fall in love.

Despite all my gripes, I will never regret reading it. Even if I dropped it halfway, that wasn't because the story was truly bad but because I wasn't strong enough to handle it - it stopped being enjoyable for me. But hopefully not for you.

ps. Don't read past chapter 475. I went back to see what that other review was talking about and it was so painful I wanted to punch a hole through my laptop. Its not worth 500 chapters of misunderstandings just to watch Spoiler

this poor guy finally have the confidence to be himself and get immediately ignored by the entire world. Just as the public were coming around to his true self, Miley just has to ruin it - what do you mean his genuine smile looks just like the joker's so he's acting??? Why did everyone agree???? So for his entire career, nobody will know to treat him like a real person??? He wins an oscar and this is the thanks he gets!!?? God its giving me a migraine just thinking about it. The fact that he continues bearing his heart out during the speech, unaware that public perception has already deemed everything he's saying fake makes it hurt all the more. Just more proof for me that the later chapters aren't nearly as good as the earlier ones.

Poorly written and over the top to the point of immaturity and being ridiculous. The author should consider therapy based off the content of their writing they have a lot of issues.
