I Became an Academy Baldo User Chapter 87 Discussion

This is kind of a mixed book for me... It's a pretty fun crazy MC type story where they act with little regard for what's proper, while also being overpowered enough that nobody can do anything to stop them... To this regard it's a pretty good book. It's characters while I wouldn't say are special or stand out to me are pretty well done by web novel standards. It also has good word building, nothing unique or special but its also pretty well done. Overall the book I would say is a pretty enjoyable read that if you like the genre I would recommend, but there is one aspect of it that really drops my evaluation of the book (below) but this is just my personal preference so I would recommend giving the book a shot.

Edit: The main character does cruel acts, like boiling people alive while trying to inflict as much pain as possible, so unless you can ignore that I don't recommend reading the book.

The biggest problem for this book in my opinion is the main character. Him being a crazy bastard is fine, it's a part of the book and one of the things that makes it enjoyable, but the issue is that the author takes it too far.

Fundamentally, the issue for me is that I don't like the main character... His normal antics are fine, but there are times when he just does things that are just plain cruel or mean, and often the book is not set up in a way to make it easy to ignore... Usually when books do this it's set up where the main character is morally in the right or the other side is bad so it somewhat clouds the readers vision towards how the main character is acting in horrific ways, but this book does a very poor job at this which just makes me dislike him...

Some examples:

• • When he is mocking the headmaster...

The headmaster as a character has been good natured... She is shown to care about the students and so far has been morally upright... She is responsible and when danger befalls the students she puts her utmost towards protecting them. Due to this it just feels mean spirited and overall bad when he is mocking her for something like not having friends in school... It doesn't feel like it's good spirited where he is messing with her, it just feels cruel and uncalled for...

• • How he treats Jessica

While if I remember correctly it hinted that she would harass him if given the chance, its still just somewhat aggravating to read about their interactions... This one is less so than the headmaster for me, but it's still basically just him harassing her.

• • The whole situation with Pierre's decedents

First of all, he doesn't respect the will of Pierre at all in the matter... Pierre made the choice to not retaliate, along with not wanting revenge which is what prevented lobo from killing them. Our MC just straight up ignored that, and while you can somewhat cover it at the end of the day he is still essentially taking revenge on behalf of someone who did not wish for it...

Then, he already basically decides to destroy them right off the bat before learning of their character at all... Because it's a story of course they turned out to be evil in an incredibly forced way, but before this was revealed he was planning on ruining their lives...

I also hate how for reasons related to ancestors 200 years in the past, people were heckling the current decedents... While, of course, they were evil the issue to me is the motive behind those jeers... They weren't being mocked for their actions as people, but instead for the actions of one of their ancestors who's actions had nothing to do with them, and before this point they probably didn't even know about this. It just feels distasteful to me when reading since this isn't related to the two themselves as bad people, but instead based on something that they had no influence on. I really think it should of focused more on the crimes of the current family... It also doesn't help how forcefully the author made them villains... "Ohohoho I cant help but laugh at the memory of when I killed my husband"

There's more than this, but this gets the idea across... The main character being a crazy bastard is fine, it's one of the selling points of the book... but the issue for me is that it goes too far, since it just goes to the level where it just feels unpleasant to read...

Update as of chapter 87:

So, I'm changing my review from 3 to 1 stars with the little bit more that I've read... There are plenty of depictions of cruelty in books, but there's a big difference is perspective. Usually if the main character is doing it they limit it to horrible people, or its more usually being done to the main character to invoke pity or some other emotion. While the people he is torturing are not innocent, the main character just simply is deranged and while that is part of the premise of the book it just fundamentally makes me hate him as a character. The book does quite a few things done well, but at the end of the day the main character ruins it. It's simply an overpowered person act inhumanely, doing whatever they please even if they are ruining innocent lives, torturing people, etc.

If thats something that you can overlook, the book is probably enjoyable, but for me it just feels disgusting to read.
