I like novels with a harem, but I prefer that there are not too many girls. Because we do not remember who they are if they are too numerous. And you can not develop their personalities later, nor their stories.

Have you ever heard of our lord and savior, "POLYGAMY" tag? I seriously don't read harem novels until I know for sure it's got some polygamy going. Love Hina scarred me for life and I will never ever read a story like that where the MC has to choose just one girl (and knowing how beta the japanese are there's a high possibility of the writer leaving the ending open ended).
The problems with harems are basically the same for any other character, lack of development, cookie-cutter personalities, useless character, annoying character, boring character, fanservice character, shelved character, and on, and on, and on.
