I actually wanted to barf when I read the forgiveness part and I had to remind myself, this is novel version Evans, the for some reason spineless version (definitely the better version compared to his manga adaptation counterpart).
Honestly, good riddance. Manga MC from her facial expressions did NOT want to have anything to do with him anymore. Heck, can you blame her? Novel version of his is basically a better/poor man's version of Schneider (but with some hints that first prince might be her first love then all is right in the world), give or take. Growing up together, I can understand if one feels betrayed that the person that was always by their side isn't the kind of person they thought they'd be but at the same time, seeing the manga raws where he lets his guard down over a crying woman who lost her family is kinda... underwhelming. Heck, he was in the scene of a crime, if his father can dig that far using his authority, why couldn't he do the same thing?
