Is not that he didn't care is simple that he considered those goals as a must. Let's not forget he was willing to sacrifice even his own body for his goals by sleeping with old disgusting dudes.
I think he cared but he buried that in himself as to not stop himself achieving what he thought he must achieve and although he was probably fooling himself that he only treated them well and did the best strategy to save their lives for his own benefits i believe that a big part was also because he cared for them.
Of course they thought he cared on surface too when he probably cared only very deep inside while lying to himself that he didn't.
Let's not forget that when he was about to make the deal to become what he became he felt he had to achieve his goals not only because he really wanted a nice castle but because he felt the sacrifices of those that helped him would have been a complete waste if he never made reality what they sacrificed themselves for.
People can take their own interpretation, but in my opinion Griffith did not really care about his Band.
Yes, he is willing to do anything to achieve his goals including sacrificing his own body, but someone with that much drive and singular focus doesnt develop normal personal relationships. They arent important to them.
I will just point out two examples of this....
One is when Griffith told Guts that he never once asked any of his Band to follow him. They all chose to do so. Guts was the first and only person he asked to join the Band. That shows that in Griffith's mind that the people in his Band are just there and nothing special. He has no true attachment to them, so he uses them as he wants.
Second is when Guts walks in on Griffith talking to Charlotte at the ball and Griffith says that he doesnt have any friends in the Band because they dont have dreams of their own. This shows that he doesnt really respect them as people, and sees them as just followers and pawns. Again, they are just to be used as Griffith wishes to achieve his goals.
Anything the Band thought was just their own skewed perception. IMO, Griffith was a bit of a sociopath. Cultivating followers just to use them and Griffith had no moral issues with it whatsoever.
