Is not that he didn't care is simple that he considered those goals as a must. Let's not forget he was willing to sacrifice even his own body for his goals by sleeping with old disgusting dudes.

I think he cared but he buried that in himself as to not stop himself achieving what he thought he must achieve and although he was probably fooling himself that he only treated them well and did the best strategy to save their lives for his own benefits i believe that a big part was also because he cared for them.

Of course they thought he cared on surface too when he probably cared only very deep inside while lying to himself that he didn't.

Let's not forget that when he was about to make the deal to become what he became he felt he had to achieve his goals not only because he really wanted a nice castle but because he felt the sacrifices of those that helped him would have been a complete waste if he never made reality what they sacrificed themselves for.

People can take their own interpretation, but in my opinion Griffith did not really care about his Band.

Yes, he is willing to do anything to achieve his goals including sacrificing his own body, but someone with that much drive and singular focus doesnt develop normal personal relationships.  They arent important to them.

I will just point out two examples of this....

One is when Griffith told Guts that he never once asked any of his Band to follow him.  They all chose to do so.  Guts was the first and only person he asked to join the Band. That shows that in Griffith's mind that the people in his Band are just there and nothing special.  He has no true attachment to them, so he uses them as he wants.

Second is when Guts walks in on Griffith talking to Charlotte at the ball and Griffith says that he doesnt have any friends in the Band because they dont have dreams of their own.  This shows that he doesnt really respect them as people, and sees them as just followers and pawns.  Again, they are just to be used as Griffith wishes to achieve his goals.

Anything the Band thought was just their own skewed perception.  IMO, Griffith was a bit of a sociopath.  Cultivating followers just to use them and Griffith had no moral issues with it whatsoever.

You should remember the words of Rickert after slapping him. The band was willing to fight for him and lose their life to help him achieve his dreams BUT that was for the Griffith they knew and believed he valued their lives too. It's one thing to willing to risk your life is another laying your life down like that like it has no value.

That is the thing though.....Griffith made it clear that he did not value or personally care about any of the band of the Hawk except for Guts.  Griffith's followers  may have thought he did, but from his actions and the things he said like "I never asked any of them to follow me." or "I only want to accomplish my goals", he never cared.  The band of the Hawk were just his tools to do with as he wished...right up to the end of the golden age arc.

The Band were not following a person who changed and was no longer the same person.  They were following the idea of a person who never existed to begin with.  Most of the members of the band of the Hawk were just infatuated with Griffith and sought his attention and approval but never got it.

The only time Griffith ever showed any sense of value for his band's lives was when he would attempt to minimize his losses, but that was more than likely just to minimize HIS losses and not weaken his forces

You said it yourself this post....'Griffith was a fighter of goals.'   That is who he was this entire time.  The people who followed him just never let themselves see that and falsely believed that the person that they admired thought more of them than he really did.

[Merrow 2]

The Black Swordsman beaten by a giant heart. Only merrows can save him. Kinda ironic. That last spread was poetic.

I knew that this Old Sorcerer would join into fray. and he is quite good.

Talk about leaving with style.

BAZOOKA!??!?!?! O___O Oh Hell thank God that Rickert did not join into Griffith and give him his weapon making skills!!!

and Griffith watches how he leaves. nice ending to this small arc.

That old fart was alive! I have to say I didn't dislike him.

I'm always suprised that most people seem to consider that the logic continuation for this manga is simply for Guts to kill Griffith and everything would be ok again.

But Griffith brought peace, not only between humans but between creatures and humans. That's why I consider Berserk to be a great story, not because Guts will take revenge but because there is this question is it the best choice to take revenge? There is a strong dilemma here.

I think Guts will see that reality at some point and I think he'll figure out a way to get rid of Griffith and the apostles once and for all, maybe getting rid of all the god hands will do the job. Also Griffith only brought peace to his own city so I'm not sure how much Guts would care for that.

only thing I gotta say is ....

Pre Magic Arc ,, Ericka would have died -- sliced open

New High Fantasy Arc ,, everybody lives

as someone mentioned previously ,, we haven't seen humans / main or side characters die in ages

That was a scary chapter. The monster was about to pull apart the little girl, to put out the fire with her blood. I didn't expect the wizard to save the day and the ending panel with Griffin, did he send that monster or what?
