Did Ichigo really have to get his ass handed to him for Yoruichi to enter this fight?

And this was supposed to be the lowest ranked quincy of the summoned ones. So Grimmjow really lost to this guy off screen? What was the point in bringing him back to this story?

Maybe he'll be involed in the later stage of this showdown but right now.... wow, thiis is awful.
