This is just the storyline in manga. Maybe they had just some seconds of fight there.

That drug definitely reminds me of Izanami from Naruto.

So many have the same thoughts. Bleach is so fucked up now that izanami is available in bleach. Or perhaps inception? Anyway what kind of side effects that have the advantage to the users in the battle? Sadist Mayuri is sadist.

It was because Toushiro doesn't honest with himself, pretending and act like he is a zombie. He doesn't acknowledged his weakness and that his smug face is annoying as telling people that he is invincible. So the Iza.... i mean, the mind travel drug working against him.
