This is so retarded and forced. The moral is a nice one, but the whole motivation is pointless and dumb.
It´s just to make Erza´s Dad a dick and justify Irene as a bitch that´s in the right when even a kid can point out how dumb everyone´s motivation is and predict that by the end she´s gonna be proven wrong because it´s obvious that she´s wrong.
She was tortured by her loved ones, but that doesn´t mean that the world is evil. it just means like with every other cookie cutter villain that just those few guys were dickholes for the sake of being dickholes. It´s bs it´s the worst form of teenage literature. It´s anger enducing in how stupid this plotline is.
Even if Erza´s Dad doesn´t have an ounce of love for his wife because political marriage, his behaviour makes zero sense. Even if his motivations are the fear of a character switch on his wife due to dragonification none of this justifies the cruelity or the violence him and his people exhibited towards Irene.
An assasination attempt or a failed execution would perfectly replace all the bullshit and give Irene a believeable story arc that delivers the same character development.
It´s been already done I CAN´T BELIEVE THIS HORSESHIT WAS WRITTEN WHEN A BETTER SHOUNEN DID THIS EXACT SAME BACKSTORY in a good way. JUST STEAL GAARA´S BACKSTORY AND YOU GOT IT.
