I think this arc is just as bad as the GMG arc, but with this chapter, and just this chapter, I thought it was OKAY, because I wasn't expecting that much out of Serena, well dead Serena, because it was either like this or Neinheart would've gotten taken out and 3 of them would be gone already, plus its obvious that the historias are not as strong as the living (well when they were alive). That was why I seemed like I was deffending this chapter... my standarts probably lowered too much. Anyway this arc overall, is bad/average, it can get a decent ending if we just erase the non important spriggans... if August, Irene, Larcade and Invel (to some extend, since he seems like a secretary of some sort...) get defeated like the rest or don't put a good fight, we're looking at the worst arc of this series, again it can still 'redeem' itself, I'd say chapter 500 will be a turn of events... or so I hope.
Don´t get me wrong, I don´t hate this chapter for Serena, it did everything it promised with him and that wasn´t a dissapointment. But I can´t say that what it promised was good. On the other hand it introduced recycled "elite villains" becoming comic relief and when he played Sorano for the sake of fanservice the chapter plummeted to a 1 for me. She had no reason to be there in this panel. The whole situation is garbage as it is, hammering the point in that the enemie army is threatening, although every reader should know by that they aren´t was just insulting. Furthermore I´m just sick of Shounen that make their cast charge in like they´re Don Quijote fighting the windmills. This isn´t limited to Fairy Tail One Piece, at least in the Anime is pretty guilty of this as well. The main characters running into huge armies, while laughing, having fun and making poses while hundreds of pawns get thrown into the air or something is the most immersion breaking flaw in Shounen imo. I believe that Natsu, Gray, Erza, Luffy or Zorro can handle this because they´ve been build up as being unnatural superhumans. But it´s just retarded to me when the authors feel obligated to involve weaker characters into the "fodderslaughter" and make them do poses or laughing their asses off as if they´re taking part in a parade and not fighting a war. IDK how awesome people think their waifus are, Nami, Robin,Lucy, Wendy (pre training) should not be involved in those Honestly fighting wise they´re as terrible as Sakura. She can dispose of fodder too and she did lots of times. The only reason some of them have been succesful was through absolute plot armor.
It´s as overused dumb and boring as every R&B track. They all go like this :"I´m so awesome" beat, blablabla "I´m awesome". Copy paste make another 300 songs
Jojo´s probably started the posing, but I assume that this was a goofy gimmick, nowadays every Shounen that doesn´t involve "tactics" has them in their fodder disposal panels. Is it honestly too much too ask of a mangaka to watch a hour long documatery on warfare. I´m not telling them to read a book, but educate yourself the slightest bit on tactical formations, or the value of terrain. I myself have barely a clue, but even I know when my immersion is just gone.
Before people accuse me of Shounen bashing, no, this isn´t limited to Shounen.
I´ve given Akame Ga Kill specifcally because of this flaw the same rating as FT.
Every time I see Esdeath charging into an army of people and slaughtering them on through the Laws of Bullshit writing I think to myself, welp, that´s why I´m not reading you again. It´s Fantasy and Authors can make shit up, usually they explain the defensive capabilities through magic or through unnatural sturdiness or whatnot. But some Manga just don´t bother, or just forgett it for certain characters which imo is one of the worst insults to the readers.
Sorry for the tangent, but to me, this chapter was just another reminder of the overusage of those tropes.
To sum it up, if there´s a wae going on, keep the tension don´t sidetrack for some dumb jokes at the most tense moments.
Nah its fine, I too am kinda sick of the missplaced comedy, and just dislike the missplaced fanservice ugh... This needs to be more serious, now FT are a bunch of lightharted kids who like this kinda stuff, but there needs to be more tention and they need to be more of a threat... honestly I stopped bothering with this since the war started, Hiro is good and building hype, but fails to stay consistent with it.
