Ok I´m literally torn in half with this chapter. It started off so promising I was expecting a rare tactical fight with action and tension for this chapter that actually would take some time to progress and be decided, Hiro Mashima can deliver that if he wants too. He´s done it with Rave and he´s done it with Fairy tail a few times.
But he threw all that promise away to turn this villain into the biggest goofball this arc has to offer yet.The people who read or watch/ed One Piece should be reminded of this guy here:
His name is Wanze and for those who don´t know, he was a joke "boss" Oda used during the Enies Lobby arc. Although being extremely goofy looking he turned out to be fairly strong, forcing Sanji one of the main characters to fight to the brink of exhaustion.
However the diffrence in those two characters lies in their rank (which defines the amount of expected threat the character creates). Wanze was never a squadmember of the "royal guard" of the arcs (possibly series) final boss, he was more like a miniboss, not a fodder level soldier but someone that was build up to take up some time and bring down a challenging fight on his own.
There is a problem that occurs through the execution of a character revelation in the order Hiro choose to do compared to Oda´s revelation of Wanze´s character. In comparision It makes Jacob feels extremely half assed and poorly designed. Wanze was introduced as a goofy looking idiot and turned out to be strong. Jacob was introduced as a weird looking badass assasin that "killed a whole city with two more men alone". But now he´s a joke!
What´s the audience supposted to think of him? Everyone was surprised anout this revelation. No one can tell me, that he predicted, that he´d turn out to be joke character although he´s a Spriggan. A group build up to be "the strongest force FT has encountered". Half of his actions within this chapter contradicted this whole notion, while all the other actions underlined his threat.
So Hiro choose the opposite direction in introducing the character traits opposed to Wanze. Why is that bad, may some ask?. Simply put Wanze was an idiot that turned out to be strong. His threat level improved, adding tension to the situation as the story progressed.Jacob was introdused a strongboy and now he´s a drooling idiot His level of threat drecreased, tension went down. As mundane and irrelevant as it sounds little details like this are important for a good story. Something Hiro keeps missing over and over.
Overall 3/5 chapter because I actually did like the comedy, I still think it´s horrible for the stroy progression but as a standalone comedy it was entertaning.
