Did you predict this from the start? If so bravo. Seriously Mashima let hints here and there to what happened to Layla and why she died. This was always the mystery of FT, the x777 stuff and how it all tied in together. Each character played a small part in the grand scheme of things.

No. Sadly at the start of the story(till avatar arc) I still expected good things from this story and the story treated women well enough for me to NOT expect something as problematic or poorly written as this concept.

What were you exactly expecting from Layla? Some kinda badass Erza version of a celestial spirit? In terms of raw power she never was strong, she was portrayed as a 'princess' type of character, so to say. Frail body, bad health... the way I see it, she did this for her family, and daughter so that she could have a good future, that's kinda the whole point of those people's plan. Layla was a strong person.

Some much welcome answers. FOr one this is not the permanent return of Aquarius so that is one of my fears appeased. Lucy still has to find the key again

Also further explanation about the Eclipse as well as the reason why it went out of control during the GMG.  IT was opened from one side. Also this pretty much settles it that there was always ONLY ONE GATE.

That end though. Poor Happy and Natsu though now we're gonna be itching with theories bout what Aquarius wanted to say.

Yeah, its a bit too convinient for the key to be restored right after 1 year... but it does makes sense, pretty sure in the past other keys got broken, hence some of them you find in different places so it makes sense. Just the 1 year stuff is convinient.

Remember CSK said he'd fought Marde in the past. Meaning at some point during the past, a key was destroyed to summon him and yet present day all of the 12 keys exist

Now she's... this? Literally ever since the Lucy and Brandish plot line initiated, her character is dropping bit by bit. She's slowly losing her original charm. The Spriggan 12 are absolute trash and didn't live up to their name. Natsu is being dumb as per usual. This is a fucking war yet it feels like no one is dying. The atmosphere feels like every single other arc.

I think that's the issue I have with this "war" compared to the Tartaros Arc.  There's a distinct lack of tension and suspense here.  I mean, last chapter Badd shot Beth from Mermaid Heel dead on with a rocket, and no one even entertains the possibility of her or the nameless fodder that were also hit being dead.  Not to mention we've had three Spriggans lose already and not a single one has actually achieved anything this war.

I'll say what I said after they fended off the first wave: When you have a background character shout "What now, Zeref?" and get no repercussions for it I can't help but feel something is wrong.

Three spriggans? ARe you seriously considering Wahl's puppet as a spriggan? The only one who was actually defeated and even that is not fully certain, he might come back, is Ajeel

Brandish took a bath, got knocked out, strangled, turned into Lucy's pet doggy.

Ajeel got teamrocketed by "Because She's Erza"

Wahl's main ability got rekt by fucking Ichiya....

Another spriggan is too busy cutting clothes off people instead of doing anything that actually matters.

Now let me remind you that each of those people are supposed to rival ten wizard saints in power....

Yet, I am sorry but so far they feel more like "filler enemy guild of the week" moments in the anime adaptation than a genuine threat. Especially after how efficient and ruthless Tartaros was.  By this far into Tartaros, we already had people like Jackal blowing up the council and destroying things, etc, laxus down, Mira and Erza kidnapped, Erza tortured, etc.

Magnolia's stills standing, nothing on note has happened, yet brandish already got humiliated and turned into a joke and Lucy already lost her entire plot(should have guessed that when Lucy's "major fight" ended up being a bath and then knocking brandish out with fucking cana), not to mention her character development("let's free the person who can destroy islands and hates my guts because we took a bath!!~ Hi Aquarius!")

Dare I say, this feels no different from Avatar "arc"

Wahl's main ability? That was the puppet's main ability. Look at the freakin cannon he shot at Fairy Tail. You do not count a remote controled puppet gettign destroyed as defeating Wahl when everything he's done since has done WAY MORE DAMAGE

You mean the shot that got trolled by FT fodder members?  That's even worse lol.

It got trolled? =_= the christina was destroyed and they could have really used that against the army that's rolling over to them like a wave so that's one less powerful weapon at FT's disposal. You're just extremely cynical =_=. In every encounter with Wahl, the Fairy Tail side lost some of their fighting power. First the Raijinshu and then Christina. Meanwhile Wahl himself is untouched. Heck he didn't even get in a fight with anyone on the Fairy Tail side and no the expendable puppet DOES NOT count. Considering that he's actually done the best out of the Spriggan.

Wahl  can always just make the cannon again and fire another shot and then the guild would be vaporized. But he's busy fighting in Hargeon right now.

Minerva conclusion was okay. Otherwise trainwreck.

Its more like Mashima lost control of the plot after Tartaros.

I think he wanted to do too much at the same time and failed quite miserably. The War and the current topics should have been separate arcs, so that once he got the personal stuff out of the way, he could have concentrated fully on the war arc.

I wonder what is that 1 thing that Acquarius failed to tell Lucy

- Aquarius is still alive....

- Aquarius from the beginning knows about THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IN THE SERIES....... so random.....

- where exactly Layla open the Gate? Just bullshit.

- if keys are so important then why the hell Layla gave someone keys? Just a plot device for her death.

1/5

New year...same old Fairy Tail.

- The  most predictable outcome to Brandish story. Yay for face heel turn that feels completely undeserved. Well I guess Brandish was treated like trash the whole arc so oh well.

- Completely and utterly disappointing Layla backstory. What the hell was that? Seriously Mashima? You made us wait 468 chapters for crappy reason of death like that?

- Completely troll ending. Natsu's just hungry ain't he? I Fully expect shit like this now. Thanks Mashima.

Annnd the manga rating gets droped one more point for me.

This arc is such a massive disappointing mess so far. Such a contrast with Tartaros arc quality writing. Everything feels forced and completely and utterly random. What the hell happened, Mashima? Even Grand Magic Games did not feel this awful.

How is Layla giving up her life for the greater good lame?

Its completely and utterly predictable.

Her death was one of THE biggest mysteries of fairy tail ever since it was first brought up. Its something fans wondered and specualted about. Layla was a figure shrouded in mystery. An enigma.

And yet in the end, 400 chapters latter, that became nothing but a pisspoor plot device for Natsu plotline. There's no mystery in the end. No pay off. She literally died as an afterthought to explain Natsu  being from 400 years ago. It does ZIP for Lucy's development, which is complete and utter contrast with how Natsu's search for Igneel impacted the story.

Did you predict this from the start? If so bravo. Seriously Mashima let hints here and there to what happened to Layla and why she died. This was always the mystery of FT, the x777 stuff and how it all tied in together. Each character played a small part in the grand scheme of things.
