He didn't because Thorfinn could defend himself easily. Also, the tribe did not hear what the old man said, and they weren't close enough to see what was happening. They will definitely misinterpret what happened because they don't know the details, only the outcome. The safest option was for Thorfinn to dodge or hold the old man's hand.
Nah, I’m with ivar on this one. The guy was in front of everyone lifting an axe.
I am not saying he was 100% wrong, but we are talking here about tribal people.
Tribes are known to stand with their people even if they were the ones who instigated hostility.
Thorfinn dealt with people before bare hands ... why wouldn't he be able to deal with some old man?
Ivar doesnt know that Thorfinn can fight and he doesnt know his past. Thorfinn is just a pacifist person for Ivar.

I’m a bit late to the party, but I just wanna say that Ivar has never seen Thorfinn fight before. In fact in all of the Vinland arc Ivar has perceived Thorfinn as a weak leader. He was simply doing what he thought was right and protecting him.
