This chapter was epic. Watching Hild slowly take off her headband and say that she forgave Thorfinn, then watching Thorfinn, Gudrid, and Einar cry - just so good. All those years of traveling together showed Hild that she can let her anger go. I could see the foreshadowing of this when she went to hunt the bear and didn't kill it, she was saying "we" in reference to things, she was helping their son Karli by fixing his shoes and such. She built the grain machine too. She was slowly changing into a gentler person.
The reason I mention the headband is its symbolism. She wears it while hunting so her hair doesn't block her ears and her senses stay sharp. She does it while in training as a kid (after Thorfinn killed her father and she ended up needing the skill) but she continues to always wear it while observing/being around Thorfinn. He was her hunt, her target - one wrong move, one wrong word... and she'd shoot him in the head with an arrow. Her removing the headband before announcing that she forgave Thorfinn is huge. She no longer has to hunt him - he's no longer her target, just as the bear was no longer her target.
