I can't say I'm pleased with how this manga is turning out. It's gradually dropping in quality, just like Berserk did after its prologue. The farmland saga at least succeeded in telling a story of Thorfinn's rebirth and had some touching moments. At this point it's just becoming too silly and deviating too far from what it was in the first place. How I miss Askeladd and Thors. They'll never be replaced.

I feel a bit of that as well, the first arc was the best. But I suppose action is not the main thing of Vinland Saga.

Anyway, Gudrid is fine so far.

There's something missing in these new chapters and i don't know what it is. i think it's the supporting characters, they are just... boring.

We need new characters like Askeladd, Thorkell, Snake... etc, because this new Thorfinn clearly can't carry this manga on his own.

Mother of all misunderstandings coming up next chapter after Gudrids fall and significant haircut.

Why is everyone giving it for a fact that she'll be Thorfinn's future wife? We don't know that for sure yet, do we? Or am I missing something?

Because IT IS a fact, a historical fact, a very VERY important historical fact when it comes to this story. In fact, historical Thorfinn would had probably never been remembered by history if he never married historical Gudrid, as she was the main advocator of their voyage to North America (aka Vinland).

I guess the author made her very young to maintain her innocence and chastity while still keeping the historical fact that she was a widower.

Does that mean Thorstein (Leif's brother and Gudrid husband) is still alive? Poor guy died when he tried to sail to Vinland and retrieve Thorvald's (Leif and Thorstein's brother) body.

I didn't know Vinland would be America at all. I was actually thinking the story would end as soon as they got to Vinland. It's hard to judge the manga until it's finished though.

Well, that tells a lot.

I mean it's from the manga title itself and the prologue in the first chapter. You got to see Leif Ericsson sailing and discovering Vinland, and was the first european to discover it(Not that shithead Columbus).

I was honestly surprised that Yukimura is focusing on the whole "war" thing at first considering the manga's the title name, and then it all started to make sense during Farmland saga. It was all just set up for the actual Voyage hence why the first half is just a prologue.

If Yukimura wanted to tell a war story about Vikings, then he should have picked Ragnar Lodbrok as the protagonist and tell his story instead  but alas we got Thorfinn Karselfini. So i thought it should be obvious to people that this is not a war story but an adventure story at heart.

                        Raws are out:

-Thorfinn's future wife, Gudrid, finally makes her appearance. Just like Thorfinn, ever since she was little, she's been fascinated by Leif's stories about Vinland and foreign lands and likes to sneak into boats to travel with him. Though Leif has promised to take her on adventures when she grows up, she thinks it's now or never, because when a woman becomes of age she's married off to someone and can't go anywhere. Her mother also told her: "riding a boat is a man's job, and a woman's job is to wait for his return". Gudrid objects to that custom, saying "who decided that anyway?" :P The sailor feels sorry for Gudrid's father and hopes her mentality would change when she grows up.

-Some years pass and the setting shifts to Halfdan's farm. Turns out Gudrid is none other than Sigurd's betrothed and ran away when the boat landed and his men are sent out to look for her. Thorfinn and co arrive at Halfdan's farm and become awed by Halfdan's property. Leif tells them to watch out for the ice-covered pier and informs them that Sigurd is getting married. Einar laments the timing and becomes worried that they didn't bring a wedding gift.

-Thorfinn comments that for a guy he was told was scary, Halfdan's village looks quite prosperous. Leif tells him that when it comes to the rumors surrounding Halfdan, there are good ones and bad ones. Thorfinn asks what the bad ones are, and Leif aswers that he had taken farms from neighboring towns for himself. Thorfinn then asks what the good rumors are, and Leif answers that the people working for Halfdan are being fed well and live comfortably.

-Thorfinn notices the barrel that Gudrid has been hiding in and wonders if it was just his imagination that he saw it moving. Gudrid prays that Thorfinn will let it go, but her cover is blown when she sees Leif. She then starts shouting at Leif that it was his fault she's in big trouble. Leif asks her what's going on and she tells him to first ride a boat and then she'll spill the beans. When it's revealed that Gudrid is Leif's sister-in-law, Einar becomes surprised because Gudrid looks like she's still in her teens.

-Gudrid goes on that the root of her problems could be traced back to Leif not keeping his promise to take her along on adventures when she grows up. Leif counters he only said that to not give him trouble and sneak into his boat like she used to when she was a kid. He then points out what everyone has been telling her ever since she was a kid: she's a woman and a woman can't go adventuring. Gudrid then takes out a knife, cuts her hair and tells him to stop calling her a woman, because there's no woman she knows of who wears her hair short.

-When she starts running to the boat, Leif warns her about the pier, slips, hits the back of her head and loses consciousness. Sigurd who watched the scene becomes horrified when he sees the chopped braid dumped on the floor.

Wow, I'm already liking Gudrid. Wonder how Yukimura is going to depict her and Thorfinn as a couple.

Oh? Is that so? *Checks* What you know, You spoiled somewhat when you said that Gunrid will marry Thorfinn. tough not much. I did not know that these character were somewhat based on real Characters. Do you enjoy reading this, when you know some history of the Iceland Vikings?

Tough i also say, I too like her already!!! XD

Actually, I did the research on Vinland and the characters after I started reading this manga. While the outline of the manga is the same as the true story, the author applied his imagination here and there. Also, as far as I know, Thorfinn's adventures in the prologue is something the author had thought up.

Sorry, I didn't mean to spoil it for anyone. I should be more careful from now on.

Not caring too much for this girl but whatever. Sort of funny how she just chopped off her hair.

I really hope we don't get a misunderstanding here.

What kind of series do you think this will be in the first place really?Well I figured it would mostly be about war in some capacity. I knew about the farmland saga before I read it but I figured it would go back to something like it started off with later. I still like it but I don't like how it's becoming more comedic and deviating from some of its earlier themes. Berserk made the same mistake when it got to volume 24.

Vinland saga is all about exploration and the colonization of America(Vinland). It was never supposed to be a war manga.

I have made an entire post addressing this here in this thread: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=619537&show=20

It's just changed and evolved from being war and action oriented to adventure. I really like where it is going, and it doesn't feel random because everything has been building up to this point. The prologue established what a brutal world it was back then, the farmland saga showed the humanity in it, and this new stage is going to show how they intend to go about making it better.

At the beginning, I thought this manga glorified violence as something exciting, and it does do that, but that violence has all built up to the anti-war message it carries now.

Gudrid is awesome.
