For an orphan who had no family for the rest of their life, the only way to become an upstart was to obtain the national qualification as an alchemist.

After graduating from the Royal Alchemist Training School, which acknowledged nothing but ability, my master (teacher) gave me the right to open my own shop as a graduation present.

After being sent off by my generous master, I, Sarasa, set out with a dream of having a slightly elegant life as an alchemist.

But…

As soon as I arrived at my destination, I was shocked. Because…

I arrived in a ‘very rural’ area that was beyond my imagination.

However, if I couldn’t run my shop in this place, I wouldn’t be able to make a living…

The translation up until this point has been quite commendable,促使我决定阅读原著...

Alright, I'll admit it, the concept is adorable. However, personally, I believe three stars might be a stretch. I'm giving it three stars because I assume most Slice of Life enthusiasts are more lenient with certain flaws. To me, the writing isn't up to par.

My main issue lies in the inconsistencies. The main character's statements often contradict themselves, either between chapters or within the same one. It seems like the author might not reread their work, as magic is prevalent but the MC is practically the only one using it. The lord is portrayed as incompetent, yet the region is relatively free of bandits due to the army's constant hunting. Despite being near a rich resource area, there's a lack of skilled fighters. There are numerous other examples that undermine the coherence when examined closely.

Another pet peeve I have, though not sure if it's the author or translator's fault, is the stiff and overly-specific writing. Early interactions feel forced and lack authenticity. Characters' dialogue occasionally comes across as condescending or sarcastic, which wouldn't be typical in real-life conversations.

Despite these inconsistencies, fans of the genre might still enjoy it without delving too deep. But in my opinion, there are much better Slice of Life novels out there that offer a smoother reading experience.

This is an authentic portrayal of everyday life, with occasional adventures that don't significantly impact the national narrative. The characters are well-developed and memorable, without significant plot inconsistencies or annoyingly foolish characters (up to this point). It's essentially a slice-of-life story. If you're not fond of this genre, it might not be for you.

This is an excellent representation of the slice-of-life genre, elevated with elements of alchemy and magic. The appeal lies mainly in the intricate world-building, delving into concepts like magic stones and the art of alchemy. If you appreciate the charm of "Ascendance of a Bookworm," you'll likely find this novel appealing. Each chapter follows the protagonist as she encounters challenges, deftly resolving them through her skills, intelligence, and kind-heartedness. It's a heartwarming and family-friendly read.
