Li Zhuoyuan is a precocious young boy who, after his mother Li Lan divorced and changed her surname, was sent to live with his maternal grandfather. His grandfather, Li Weihan, and his great-grandfather, Li Sanjiang, are both \"body retrievers,\" with Li Sanjiang being a highly respected elder in the village. During a funeral, Li Zhuoyuan witnessed his grandfather handling a corpse and gradually became exposed to the mysterious world of body retrievers.

As the story unfolds, Li Zhuoyuan discovers that he can see evil spirits. Under the guidance of his great-grandfather, he begins to learn the skills of a body retriever. He gradually learns that body retrievers are not only responsible for handling the dead but also for bridging the gap between the living and the deceased. Amid a series of supernatural events, Li Zhuoyuan, with his intelligence and courage, fights against evil spirits and unravels the mysteries of the village.
