Ultimately, I would say this manga is plot-driven with a straightforward yet reliable storyline. It offers an engaging narrative filled with action and suspense, though it lacks substantial depth beyond surface-level elements. The character relationships are fairly weak, and there are some consistency issues—like the unclear role of "grandpa"—but the simplicity of both plot and characters makes for a reasonably enjoyable read. While it touches on significant topics such as heroes in war, racism, propaganda, and the responsibility of governments versus civilians, it doesn't delve deeply into these themes. Instead, it focuses primarily on telling a story about combating an alien invasion. Despite its simplicity, I found it to be a decent tale. The action sequences, while not possessing the complexity typically expected in mech action, are solid, and the sporadic comedy is passable. Additionally, the artwork is quite good.

tl;dr: A story that occasionally aims to appear more profound but is essentially a simple and solid tale about a person battling aliens in a war.

There are two really great ways to describe this manga. One is who it's by and the genre it's tackling: It's a super-robot manga by Kenichi Sonoda, the legendary girls-with-guns mangaka behind Gunsmith Cats and Riding Bean. For me, I know Sonoda mostly through his character work for Bubblegum Crisis 2032. I stopped reading Gunsmith Cats around the time a lesbian brainwashing rapist became a major character—wish that was a joke.

Anyway, the other way to describe Cannon God Exaxxion is as the anti-Evangelion. Here's why:

Teenage protagonist? This one beats up kids at school for disrespecting his granddad's name and jumps into the robot without hesitation or emotional trauma—there's an alien invasion to handle!

Mad Scientist Parental Figure? He's outrageously wacky, all spikey hair and hot-blooded determination to send those space-monkeys packing, asking even fewer questions than his descendant!

Mom? Still alive, and her hair transforms into a nanotech hardsuit! Love interest? Mentally stable, and the outcome of their relationship is never in doubt! The mech? Not a metaphor for returning to the womb; instead, it features a giant antimatter-powered cannon extending from its torso—some might say, with a name like Exaxxion, it's kind of phallic! The aliens? They look human and are mostly evil! Exaxxion is good, clean, wholesome fun.

Except, well, there are some complexities. There's reasonable hard-ish technobabble involving nanotech, antimatter, and antigravity. What's truly intriguing is the PR war between the human resistance and alien occupiers, as the latter tries to convince humanity they're not planning omnicide and that the guys with the giant robot are the real villains. This plotline doesn't get much development, especially since the manga wraps up in what feels like a season and a half of anime rather than a full two—perhaps Sonoda lost interest or Kodansha directed him back to Gunsmith Cats. But it's present and adds depth to the story that most manga don't attempt.

The issue is that Dark Horse published five out of seven volumes in the early aughts but has no plans to complete the series, as it was largely a Studio Proteus / Toren Smith translation, similar to Gunsmith Cats. Your best option is to find a scanlation site—though in the later half, the quality starts to decline significantly, almost as if English wasn't their first language. Still, getting any ending is better than none.

It's unfortunate because this is easily one of my favorite manga, effortlessly tapping into my fanboy Id and making me squeal and snigger with glee. This manga deserves your time, attention, and better treatment overall.
