Before reading any of my reviews, please note that I am an exceptionally harsh critic. I don't hand out 10's easily, and anything I rate 7 or higher, I consider worthy of recommendation.

Story: 7/10  
The core story on its own would earn a 9/10 from me, but the cryptic, apocalyptic subplot felt unnecessary and detracted from the overall narrative, which is unfortunate because the main story is truly remarkable. There were several sensual/sexual scenes, but it's important to remember that they live in an era where sexual activity seems largely non-existent. For most of the manga, we see the two protagonists exploring themselves and each other, which I found to be an intriguing and moderately well-executed theme. From the beginning of the series, I had an idea of how it might conclude. However, the ending surprised me. While I had a sense of what would happen, the manner in which it unfolded was completely unexpected. The conclusion deserves full marks, 10/10, due to its profound impact. The exploration of human themes was also commendable. The questioning of what makes us "human" added depth, especially given the story's setting in a world where no one can truly be considered "human" by today's standards. The fact that the most human character isn't human at all underscores this point effectively.

Art: 10/10  
A rare perfect score. The character designs were simple yet undeniably cute and attractive. The innocence of the two main characters was beautifully emphasized through their design, enhancing the story significantly. They were meticulously crafted and perfectly suited to the narrative. The background art was equally impressive. The house, the city, the lab, the tomato plant—everything was simple yet detailed, offering a refreshing visual experience in a world often lacking in originality. This series proves that manga art doesn't need to be complex to be excellent and impactful.

Character: 8/10  
Ai and Ikuru deserve 9.5/10. They were exceptionally well-developed and portrayed with minimal flaws. Both characters were highly likable, and I'm almost inclined to give them perfect scores. Their interactions were flawless, and they complemented each other beautifully. Nagi-sensei, however, earns a 7/10. I felt her character wasn't fully developed, with significant gaps in her backstory that could have been addressed. Despite this, I enjoyed her presence, though it's regrettable she wasn't more prominent in the story. Other side characters range from 1/10 to 3/10. In my opinion, if a side story introduces additional characters, they should be properly developed, which wasn't the case here.

Enjoyment: 8/10  
"Enjoyment" might not be the best term for this type of series. The overall tone was dark and somber, with a looming sense of foreboding throughout. This doesn't align with my usual definition of "enjoyment." A better term might be "appreciation." The messages conveyed by this manga are invaluable—about humanity, love, life, death, and pursuing dreams. You finish this series with a deeper appreciation for what you have. If it weren't for the distracting side story, I would award this a full 10/10.

Overall: 8/10  
Currently rated 8/10, it feels closer to 8.5/10, and I'm tempted to bump it up to 9/10. This is a deeply moving story about love, life, and humanity. While the side story was somewhat of a distraction—cryptic, poorly executed, and not essential to the main narrative—it wasn't entirely detrimental. If I were to rate the side story alone, it would receive a 5 (average, nothing special but not bad). What sets this series apart are the characters Ai and Ikuru and their interactions with others.

To anyone who enjoys romance and tragedy, I strongly recommend this hidden gem. The story and characters will leave a lasting impression, possibly forever. You won't regret reading this manga.

Throughout the narrative, the understated, adorable, and expressive couple continuously warms my heart with their sweet, affectionate gestures. The tale primarily focuses on the two individuals, encouraging readers to delve into the concept of love between a person and another "person" with an expiration date. This theme shares some resemblance with works like "Tokidoki" and "3 Days of Happiness," as it examines the emotions and thoughts one experiences while coming to terms with the limited time they have with their loved ones. However, the plot twist towards the end caught me off guard, as it seemed to shift away from the central love story, which dampened my enthusiasm. Despite the somewhat unexpected ending, I believe this is still a compelling and worthwhile story to read. <p>

<p>Ai-Ren is a sci-fi lament for humanity's final days. In the distant future, humans have largely lost the natural ability to reproduce, relying on technology to fill the gaps with growing desperation. Nuclear war and poverty ravage the global south, until a mysterious figure appears, offering salvation from complete annihilation. This broader context frames the central narrative, where Ikuru, a terminally-ill individual, obtains an artificially-created "end-of-life companion" named Ai, whose lifespan is deliberately limited. Their bond is fated to be fleeting, yet like others in this tale, they seek joy in minor moments. Children still arrive in this blighted world, and life persists stubbornly, intent on seeing its course through to the end. Ai-Ren serves as a concise yet powerful testament that love, in its essence, is what truly defies death.</p>

<p>tl;dr: A manga with two distinct storylines that ultimately converge, one being compelling and emotionally resonant, while the other feels disorganized and chaotic.<br /><br />This series offered more depth than I anticipated, though unfortunately, not necessarily for the better. The primary narrative revolves around Ikuru, a young man facing imminent death, and Ai, a girl born with a condition that leaves her in a similar plight. Together, they seek solace and joy amidst their circumstances, forming connections with various characters who bring their own stories and life lessons. This storyline was masterfully crafted, blending heartwarming and heartbreaking moments that genuinely moved the reader. It conveyed profound messages about life and mortality—that death is inevitable, an aspect of existence we can never fully embrace but must learn to coexist with, making the most of our time and leaving a meaningful legacy. Though these themes might seem clichéd, this work presented them in a refreshingly unique manner, evoking significant emotional impact. Adding to its intrigue, the tale unfolds in a semi-apocalyptic future involving alien intervention and the cessation of human evolution, focusing on the secretary general of an organization dedicated to humanity's preservation. However, this secondary plot felt largely detached from the main story, both narratively and tonally, contributing little beyond setting up the conclusion. Moreover, it wasn't particularly well-executed. Despite its lofty, philosophical statements, these ideas lacked proper development or significance, rendering them hollow and unimpactful. This subplot consumed considerable time, appearing needlessly convoluted and perplexing. The two narratives failed to harmonize effectively, and while one was undeniably strong, the other detracted from the overall experience. The artwork, however, remained consistently solid.</p>

This manga is a masterpiece!  
I am not a native English speaker, so I can't fully articulate all the emotions I experience with every word, page, and chapter.  
My heart quivers.  
The sadness, the happiness, and the philosophy intertwined within it—don't think, just feel.  
The deeper you read, the more indescribable it becomes, yet the feelings grow stronger.  
I will love this manga until the end of my life.  
I started learning Japanese to read Ai-Ren in its purest form.  
Please immerse yourself in it.
