I absolutely adore Yuu Watase! The first short story, "Mint de Kiss," was pure magic. I genuinely wish it had been expanded into a full mini-series—it was incredibly charming, and the magical elements added such a delightful twist. Sure, there were a few clichés, but they didn't detract from how much I enjoyed the tale. In contrast, the second story (the one about gensei kai?) took a darker turn and was somewhat unsettling. This stark difference between the first and second stories really highlights Yuu Watase's versatility in crafting incredible narratives across various genres. While there was a touch of romance, the overall tone leaned more toward horror, which was quite effective.
As for the final short story, it was definitely my least favorite. The premise was sweet—a tomboy who’s always overlooked by boys discovers love in an unexpected place—but the execution left something to be desired. Her methods felt manipulative at times, even if her intentions weren’t malicious. It just came off as strange and uncomfortable. Additionally, while I appreciate that Watase includes LGBTQ+ characters, their roles often feel like punchlines, which is disappointing. Considering this collection was published years ago, I suppose it shouldn't come as a surprise. Still, certain moments, like the teacher coming out (especially since it involved Misono), struck me as odd upon reflection. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either.
That said, Yuu Watase never fails to impress with her writing and artistry. She has a unique ability to evoke deep emotions in her readers, and I find myself fully immersed in every story she creates. I only wish these tales had been longer! Overall, another fantastic addition to her body of work.
