Eleanor Lockwood, a woman who fled her family's werewolf legacy, finds herself thrust back into the world she desperately tried to escape. A brutal ritual names her the Alpha of the Lockwood pack, a role she never wanted. As she grapples with her newfound power and the responsibility it entails, a rebellion simmers within the pack. Agatha, a powerful Lockwood matriarch, fuels dissent, convinced the ritual was corrupted and that Eleanor is unfit to lead. Haunted by a vision of her past – a man with her mother – Eleanor delves into the secrets of her lineage, uncovering a possible connection to a different, stronger bloodline within the Lockwoods. Meanwhile, she must prove her leadership through cunning strategy and displays of strength, both physical and mental. The trial by combat against Jacob, the black sheep, looms, but a greater threat may be lurking on the horizon. Will Eleanor embrace her destiny and unite the fractured pack? Can she forge a new path for the Lockwoods, one that bridges the gap between human and wolf? Or will the weight of the past and the rebellion within tear the pack apart, leaving them vulnerable to unforeseen dangers?

Salad Days is a collection of stories, with what appears to be a central narrative that the author develops and continues, as most of the stories are standalone episodes.
The tales are endearing and fantastic, evoking heartwarming feelings, and some may even bring tears to your eyes.
The artwork is exquisite as well. I believe the artist excelled in shading techniques, making the illustrations feel incredibly lifelike.
This is one of my all-time favorite mangas, and I would happily read it again, reliving the memories of when I first discovered this gem.

First of all, yes, the artwork isn't exceptional. It is from 1999, after all. The scans could definitely be improved. HOWEVER, the stories are fantastic. The mangaka is truly a genius at storytelling.

Overall, the stories range from everyday love tales to mystical adventures and even explore themes like recovering from the loss of a loved one.

As other reviewers have mentioned, these are mostly 1-3 chapter stories, but there is one story that spans about 10 years in the lives of two characters, Yuki and Futaba, starting from the day they first met. If you read nothing else, make sure to read these chapters. On their own, they tell a story that surpasses most similar manga.

    The relevant chapters are:
    24-26, 29-30, 53-54, 60, 67, 75-76, 83, 91, 102-104.

Salad Days is akin to a collection of one-shots, but on a much larger scale. This manga comprises numerous short stories woven together, each exploring different facets of romance. Some tales feature unrequited love, while others involve characters forced into relationships due to drunken parental pacts, and more.

The standout aspect of Salad Days is the concise length of all its stories. Many romance mangas tend to drag on longer than necessary, but this never occurs in Salad Days. Don't misunderstand; this doesn't imply that Salad Days lacks the romance or sweetness found in other mangas. On the contrary, it excels significantly in this regard.

Some readers might initially find the manga confusing because the characters change after a few chapters. However, as you continue reading, you'll discover that almost all the characters are interconnected, with some recurring throughout. For instance, one of my favorite couples begins by disliking each other, but with each story arc, they grow closer.

An exceptional read and one of my favorite romance mangas. Highly recommended. Overall rating: 9/10.

Salad Days is a really adorable romance series. :) I thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn't resist finding the rest of the books once I came across them. The brief, standalone stories also mean you don't have to read the books in order, nor worry about keeping track of all the little details.

The story is very well written but the quality seems to go downhill around chapter 300. While its still readable, snippets of the story are missing and the the mc appears to become more dumber and starts acting like a typical villainous monster in those wuxia novels. Also while in the first half of the story the mc seems to be almost anti-human, in the later parts he starts acting more and more humanely which doesn't seem to be in context with the story.
