Highly nonsensical, yet it still pulls off being incredibly funny. It loves to parody other shonen manga.
Art 3/10
The art is generally not great. The shading seems to imitate the early parts of Jojo or Fist of the North Star. However, the hatching often doesn't make sense when considering the environment's lighting.
Character designs are unique and memorable. Who could forget a man with a poop-shaped head, a jelly-like blob that walks, and a 'sexy' bipedal torpedo? Case closed.
Character 10/10
There's a distinct line between the sane and insane characters, and that's what makes this manga so amusing.
Enjoyment 10/10
This is the kind of manga that cracks you up in elementary school. Then you outgrow it as a teenager. Now you're in your late twenties, and to your surprise, you find Bobobo hilarious once again.
Overall 8/10
The manga can sometimes feel cluttered, with rough drawings that aren't always visually polished. However, it perfectly captures the chaotic energy needed for its story. Despite the busy backgrounds and panels, they're packed with action and excitement. There's so much happening that it can be challenging to follow everything. The series is filled with parodies, references, and jokes—so many that some inevitably went over my head due to their sheer volume. The slapstick, nonsensical gag humor never gets old. While the final arc of the manga was somewhat underwhelming compared to the others, with a noticeable dip in comedy, it still offered an enjoyable experience.
The show boasts an extensive cast of characters, some of whom might seem annoying or overly exaggerated. Surprisingly, I don't find this to be the case. Each character has a distinct role and contributes to the ever-evolving comedic situations the team encounters. That said, the slapstick nature does create some imbalance in character dynamics—Bobobo rarely finds himself on the receiving end of the jokes, which slightly detracts from the humor. Don Patch fares better in this regard, but Tennosuke often ends up as the punching bag.
While the series isn't without its flaws, it offers plenty of great moments and memorable experiences.
Let's get one thing straight: if you take Bobobo seriously, you're completely missing the point. This is a comedy manga. The idea that Bobobo fights with nose hair, or that Don Patch is an orange... well, something, should be met with a "haha oh wow" mindset. If you don't approach it this way, you're not only ruining your own enjoyment but also coming across as incredibly dense. The story aligns perfectly with the humorous theme of the series, and the characters are all hilariously fleshed out in their own unique ways. I couldn't stop laughing while reading it. Fans of Yu-Gi-Oh and Dragon Ball Z will appreciate the various parodies of these and other mangas.
In terms of art, it complements the absurdity of the manga beautifully. While it might seem mediocre compared to other mangas, when paired with the extreme humor of this series, it fits like a glove.
If you're looking for something outrageously funny and not too serious, Bobobo definitely fits the bill. Absolutely recommended.
