Nonetheless, this ambiguity adds an element of suspense, making Elden believe he's safe as long as he keeps his distance (and he does). My main critique lies in the one-dimensional portrayal of the villains other than Elden, though this may change as I've only read up to about twenty chapters.
In the context of the story, the main character has effectively communicated his intention to leave and expressed remorse for his earlier actions, reflecting a level of politeness. The female lead's refusal to accept this outcome reveals her crossing a line into impolite behavior, setting the stage for later chapters, as hinted around Chapter 57. The tension arises from her desire for a deeper apology or retribution, which the protagonist, as a salaryman, might perceive as simpler to endure than escalating the conflict by fleeing. However, he remains a rational person who doesn't wish to fuel her obsession, especially since he wasn't the cause of the initial issue.
The escalating conflict can be attributed to the女主角's spoiled nature and the author's design catering to the popular trope of regretful heroines. While such a character setup might seem implausible, much of the lack of authenticity stems from it.
The current narrative, however, seems somewhat forced, as the development of the original story, where a mutual redemption arc unfolds, seems more natural than the excessive regret the女主角 is experiencing. Her actions up to Chapter 57 may be seen as petty, but not necessarily unforgivable, considering their history. Losing face for her family is a minor setback, not a deal-breaker in either a romance or harem context.
In "TitRF," the protagonist finds himself transmigrated into a villain competing to marry the future duchess. As the story progresses, we learn that the duchess, who attended school under an alias, endured abuse from the other contestants. She devised this competition as a form of retaliation, subjecting them to trials replicating her suffering.
However, this central premise lacks logic. The requirement for the duchess to marry one of them doesn't seem reasonable, and there's no explanation for her willingness to participate despite her trauma. The author even depicts her ongoing nightmares and PTSD, making the idea of marrying one of her abusers even more baffling.
This central theme drives the story's progression and impacts its development, but it fails to hold water. The author, to some extent, seems aware of the illogical nature of the plot. There's an "advisor" character attempting to understand the situation, but without a solid foundation, the rest of the events feel disconnected and purposeless.
While I'm open to overlooking minor inconsistencies, this core issue is fundamental to the story's structure, rendering many aspects feel hollow and meaningless.
The main character's logic for not assisting the female lead is shockingly selfish – simply because he wasn't the initial perpetrator, he believes he has no responsibility. This is absurd, as many times, people must step up to help even when not directly involved. Expecting a traumatized, mentally struggling woman to 'get over it' by an apology is unjustifiable and displays a lack of understanding.
The author continually tries to justify the MC's actions, painting him as the hero, which only exacerbates my frustration. If this was meant to be a tragedy, the author fails miserably – the MC's choices cause unnecessary suffering, unlike a classic tragedy where fate plays a role. But even if it were a character study, the author should not condone the main character's behavior.
It baffles me that anyone could find enjoyment in this. The repetitive suffering of the female lead leaves me questioning the point and any underlying message. I hope the author's intentions are not genuinely malicious, as the story's themes appear cruel.
