This manga revolves primarily around the blossoming relationship between Misaki and Usui, as well as the people in their lives. Most chapters depict everyday events, which could come across as mundane, but they work beautifully here thanks to the dynamic between the two leads. If there is a plot, it’s the gradual, sweet romance that unfolds between them. While many elements are undeniably clichéd, I approached this story with the mindset of someone who craves a good romance. Even if some plot devices feel familiar, Misaki’s character feels refreshingly unique among shoujo protagonists, keeping the narrative engaging for me.

Misaki is diligent and hardworking, almost to an extreme degree. I can’t say I relate to her—after all, I wasn’t nearly as driven in high school, nor did I ever become student council president out of concern for others. Her family struggles financially due to her father abandoning them with debt. What sets Misaki apart is that she isn’t a stereotypical girly girl prone to whining or crying. When faced with challenges, Misaki tackles them head-on without complaint or hesitation. It seems like boys were simply not on her radar, likely because she had so much else on her plate. This explains the slow start some readers might criticize and her reactions to Usui’s antics. Her inexperience and naivety about love make it difficult for her to understand both Usui and her own feelings toward him. Another standout aspect of Misaki is that she doesn’t fit the tsundere mold, which I appreciated immensely. Unlike many female characters in manga who hide or manipulate their emotions, Misaki is rational, outspoken, and honest at all times. While she initially denies any connection with Usui, I believe this stems from genuine confusion rather than embarrassment.
On the flip side, we have Usui, who contrasts sharply with Misaki in nearly every way. He’s impossibly perfect: handsome, intelligent, athletic—all achieved effortlessly. Oh, and he’s wealthy too. Compared to the more grounded Misaki, Usui feels like a fantasy. However, what makes him likable despite his perfection is his boredom with it all. If such a person existed in real life, I’d prefer them to be apathetic rather than boastful. Usui rarely flaunts his talents unless it involves Misaki, and his wealth plays no role in their relationship. This adds depth to their dynamic and highlights why I adore both characters. Despite recognizing Usui as a fan-service character, his devotion and the way he expresses his feelings for Misaki are nothing short of flawless. Plus, let’s be honest—his aloof charm and undeniable attractiveness don’t hurt either. *swoon*
As for supporting characters, while most aren’t deeply developed, Satsuki (the maid café manager) stands out as a personal favorite. She often mirrors the reader’s reactions, adding a layer of humor I found delightful. Ultimately, these secondary characters serve as a backdrop to highlight Misaki’s journey.

The artwork in this manga is stunning, especially considering how much the mangaka improved throughout the series. Early depictions of Usui felt somewhat flat, but as the art evolved, so did his expressions, making him feel more human and relatable.

I devoured this manga in a matter of days, unable to put it down except for brief moments. Its straightforward storytelling resonated with me deeply. Many mangas rely heavily on contrived conflicts or misunderstandings that could easily be resolved through open communication, which frustrates me endlessly. "Special circumstances" often feel forced, detracting from the overall experience. This manga avoids those pitfalls entirely, focusing instead on the natural progression of Misaki and Usui’s relationship. For me, its simplicity elevates it above countless others. As a romance, it deserves a perfect score. In broader terms, it ranks around an 8 or 9 among all manga.
On a final note, I read the manga on mangahere, where tsukkomi comments enhanced my enjoyment significantly. They added layers of humor and engagement that made the experience even richer. If you’re considering giving this manga a try, I highly recommend reading it there!
Plot: Seika High School, once an all-boys institution infamous for its wild students and being a frightening place for girls, has recently transitioned into a co-ed school. With the female population still a minority and living in fear of the male students' extreme behavior, Misaki Ayuzawa takes it upon herself to reform the school and create a safe environment for the girls.
Through rigorous training, studying, and eventually becoming the first female student council president, Misaki has earned a reputation among the male students as a strict, boy-hating dictator and a beacon of hope for the teachers and fellow female students. However, despite her tough exterior, she secretly works part-time at a maid café to support her family. Unfortunately, her hard-earned reputation is jeopardized when the charming and somewhat aloof Usui Takumi becomes interested in her after discovering her in a maid uniform after school. Now Usui follows Misaki everywhere and even saves her from time to time. She initially hated him, but things are taking a different turn... You'll have to read to find out!
I give this manga a 100, and it's my second favorite manga of all time (my first is Bleach).
That is probably the most accurate way to describe Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
Story(6/10): The plot introduces us to Misaki Ayuzawa, a student who works very hard to achieve her goals, and Takumi Usui, a boy who stands out for being perfect and mysterious. Misaki begins to establish a relationship with Takumi, where her biggest secret will keep them very close.
In this way, we gradually witness a typical high school romance. The story is not groundbreaking at all, but it works because the characters are well constructed.
Unfortunately, the problem with this series is perhaps that it wallows so much in comical situations that sometimes the relationship between the protagonists seems to not move forward.
I also want to mention that the arc where a certain important character for Misaki returns could have been exploited and developed more since it is a key factor by which Misaki is the way she is.
Art(8/10): As in other shoujo manga, the art stands out for presenting a pleasant-eye character design, and as usual, the absence of backgrounds highlights the expressions that are well worked out, as well as the movement scenes, providing the sensation without losing sharpness of what's happening.
Characters(7/10): Misaki is characterized by being diligent, honest, hard-working, and physically capable, traits that do not usually match the typical protagonists of shoujo stories, which are characterized by being clumsy, feminine, and physically inferior.
However, when Misaki is around Takumi, she tends to lose her strength that characterizes her and reveals the more feminine and tsundere side of her.
Takumi is the typical male shoujo character who is perfect in almost every way. He is handsome, smart, popular, and is always on the lookout for Misaki. Although he has a mysterious past and is distant from everyone except Misaki, he is a good boy.
Although the main characters have a certain charm and are entertaining to watch, the same cannot be said for the supporting cast. Removing certain people close to the characters such as Misaki's family or Shintani, the rest of the cast simply does not have much appeal and can overwhelm the number of characters that are presented and have no importance.
Enjoyment(7/10): Seeing Misaki and Takumi together is a comforting thing that I never get tired of seeing, and it satisfies my needs for romance. Although there are some flaws in the direction that the plot took sometimes or it was heavy for me to bear certain supporting characters, I think it has been a pleasant and entertaining experience.
Overall(7/10): Kaichou wa Maid-sama! It is an acceptable and entertaining story that, despite its age and flaws, deserves a chance for all lovers of the genre.

I first watched the anime and loved it, then decided to collect the manga to see how the story concludes. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the manga even more than the anime.
I'm not a big fan of shoujo manga since many stories feel cliché or uninteresting, but I believe anyone—whether a shoujo fan or not—would enjoy *Maid Sama*. Here's why:
**Story:** The narrative was fantastic, filled with unexpected twists and hooks that kept me hooked. There was a pairing I hoped would work out, though I didn’t think it would happen—but they did get a happy ending, which made my heart soar. However, one flaw kept me from giving it a perfect score: its length. Some parts felt unnecessary and slowed down the pace, which might discourage readers. I persisted because I believed it would improve, and it eventually did, but trimming some sections could have enhanced the flow.
**Art:** The artwork is simply stunning. I adore the bishounen aesthetic (especially for Usui), and the exaggerated facial expressions during comedic moments were hilarious. The art is breathtaking overall.
**Characters:** The character arcs are exceptional. Characters you initially dislike grow on you as their personalities and backstories unfold. Misaki’s development was particularly rewarding to witness. The author deserves credit for maintaining consistent and engaging character development throughout. With so many characters in *Maid Sama*, it's impressive that none were neglected—all have distinct personalities and compelling arcs.
**Overall:** This manga is truly remarkable, and I highly recommend it, especially for newcomers to manga. It easily ranks among my top 5 favorite series.

Without trying to spoil anything, here we go. To start with, it's a typical shoujo story in its basic form; a girl and a boy both like each other, though one of them (the main female in this case) initially dislikes and then tries to avoid being in such a relationship with the main male. They eventually end up in a relationship, but the main female wants it kept hidden at first. You can probably figure out the rest of the story from there. To make it "unique," the mangaka had the main character, who at school acts as an unbeatable role model student trying to enforce school rules with all the students (mainly the boys), work a part-time job which she wants to remain a secret—being a maid at a cafe. Though most of what happens is predictable, it still entertains the reader (rather than annoys), so it's not bad for its genre.
Art - 7
The art is pleasant enough, not rough or repetitive where half the characters look the same. All the major and the majority of the minor characters are easy to tell apart, with only a few recurring minor ones perhaps causing issues in that regard. It doesn't have a "wow" effect, but for a shoujo, it does its job, though none of the characters are really eye candy, which can be either good or bad I suppose.
Character - 8
For the type of manga it falls under, it doesn't do too badly with characterization. Though some are outright ridiculous, it doesn't get to the point where it annoys the reader, but rather fits right into the story. The main characters, honestly, aren't really "special;" it's more some of the other characters and how they all fit together that led to a rating of 8.
Enjoyment - 8
As I mentioned earlier, it does entertain the reader, which is the whole reason for reading a manga such as this. It doesn't get too mushy-mushy, so it's easy on readers who usually avoid typical romance shoujo (which I fall under).
I gave it an overall of 8 in my list rating since you can't give half points; if I could, I would've probably given it a 7.5 rating. If you're looking for any of the following—something unique, smut, or totally unpredictable—I suggest you look elsewhere. If you don't have the patience to read an 85-chapter (I believe, and that it's 98 including extras) typical romance shoujo, don't enjoy predictable story lines, or just flat-out can't stand typical romance manga, you'll want to look elsewhere too. If you're looking for some simple, yet enjoyable, romance story while waiting for the next chapter of ... manga to come out, then this is for you.
