An indescribable sorrow and hatred welled up within Ning Shu as she charged towards the advancing Tartars, whipping her lasso towards their faces. The barbs pierced their skin and even tore out some of their eyes.
"Forward, forward..." Finally, the distant hoofbeats of approaching horses arrived. The long-awaited rescue party had finally appeared.
A Great Yong general led his troops, and upon seeing the corpses strewn across the ground, he immediately shouted, "Prepare for battle!"
He Lianying had not brought many soldiers. As he observed Ning Shu, drenched in blood save for her bright eyes, he gave a brief glance and ordered his troops, "Retreat."
The Tartars quickly retreated behind He Lianying, facing off against the Great Yong soldiers. Ning Shu wiped the blood from her face, even her nose filled with the heavy, revolting scent of blood.
She couldn't afford to let her guard down, keeping a wary eye on He Lianying. Her hand trembled slightly as she held onto her whip. He Lianying casually smiled at Ning Shu, despite clearly being injured. Apart from a slightly pale complexion, he appeared not to be in pain at all.
He was indeed fierce, even to himself.
He Lianying pointed at the captured Tartars and said nonchalantly, "Release our North Mongolian warriors."
Ning Shu chuckled. Didn't he understand the situation? She couldn't help but retort, "What if this princess refuses? What's the point of your strong North Mongolian soldiers? Our Great Yong will use ten lives to trade for just one of your Tartars. If ten won't do, then we'll use a hundred."
He Lianying's pupils dilated momentarily before he burst into laughter. Throughout their exchange, his gaze had grown brighter, and in the end, his laughter held an appreciative tone. He Lianying traced his finger along his lip.
"Who would've thought that such a steadfast character exists in a place of prosperity, where people wallow in indulgence? Not even the border generals of Great Yong dare address His Highness this way. Jiayi, you shouldn't have been born in Great Yong. You're a woman meant for the open plains."
Ning Shu merely sneered. To avoid marrying you, she'd endure any price.
At this point, Ning Shu wasn't confident in accomplishing her mission. In the face of national conflicts, individuals were too insignificant. She needed to assist the original host in escaping this man.
Seemingly, the power of the story was too strong. Despite managing to escape the forced marriage, this He Lianying had become fixated on her.
Men were all base creatures, desiring what they couldn't have. When he had married the original host, he treated her abominably. Now, he actually wanted her to leave with him? It was practically spitting in Great Yong's and Li Wen's faces.
Perhaps He Lianying was attempting to undermine Great Yong's morale. Imagine a scenario where a nation's princess runs off with the enemy's prince, following a humiliating peace treaty. It would be a massive embarrassment.
Her reputation would be forever tarnished.
Ning Shu sneered, "Your North Mongolia is a land where rulers act unworthy of their station, and subjects lack decorum: a place bereft of the Three Principles and Five Virtues. How can a place like that suit an incorruptible princess? He Lianying, crawl back into the hole you came from. Begone!"
He Lianying's face grew increasingly pale, and upon hearing Ning Shu's final words, he was so enraged that he coughed up blood. Of course, a shameless character like He Lianying wouldn't be angered to that extent. It was the poison acting up.
"You truly did poison me." He Lianying wiped at the black blood at the corner of his mouth.
Ning Shu spread her hands and shrugged innocently. "This princess is honest and never lies."
He Lianying stared intently at Ning Shu's face, examining it minutely. Eventually, he chuckled heartily. "Princess Jiayi, prepare yourself. This prince will not rest until I obtain you!"
"I'm truly scared," Ning Shu patted her chest. "I just enjoy seeing you frustrated yet unable to possess this princess."
"Let's go..." He Lianying coughed up another mouthful of blood, then ordered the North Mongolian soldiers to retreat.
He Lianying turned his horse around, preparing to leave the captives behind. Ning Shu laughed coldly. Did he think he could come and go freely on Great Yong's soil?
She grabbed her bow and arrow, drawing it back into a full moon shape. The tip of the arrow shimmered with cold light as it aimed at He Lianying's back.
She released the bowstring, and the arrow flew straight towards He Lianying.
Well, that's about it for now, since such novels often fade quickly. As for its quality, we'll have to see.
Though, I must admit, I did enjoy the initial chapters.
The character displays empathy and compassion for others, which adds depth to their personality. There are no clichéd romantic subplots involving stealing partners or forced relationships; instead, friendships and love interests develop organically from genuine connections. Each arc offers a unique blend of genres, such as adventure and comedy, with the central theme being helping others improve their lives.
One aspect that stands out is the transmigration element, where the main character encounters familiar faces in different personas across various worlds. This adds an intriguing twist to the narrative.
However, there are a few aspects that could be improved. Although each arc has a conclusion, not all have follow-up stories, leaving some loose ends. The endings of certain arcs feel unsatisfying despite the overall quality of the story. One particular favorite arc, involving cultivation and gender bending, concluded too abruptly.
Additionally, some arcs contain tragic elements that can be difficult to stomach, though the story remains engaging. There's also a minor annoyance in the plot, possibly due to the AI wiping the protagonist's memories or a oversight by the author, where important details are left unaddressed.
In summary, while the story has many appealing aspects, a few areas could use refinement to provide a more cohesive and emotionally satisfying experience for readers.
Hence, this marks my first encounter with a rapid-transmigration storyline sans any romantic subplots.
Ning Shu has even influenced my perception of certain manga and webtoons, as their one-dimensional female characters pale in comparison to hers, especially when they exhibit foolish behavior."
Though the novel starts off poorly, it gradually improves as it progresses. It's widely acknowledged that the first arc isn't particularly strong. The plot really picks up around chapter 50. If you want to skip the less appealing parts of the early chapters, I suggest reading the first six and then jumping straight to chapter 50. Here's a brief summary of significant events in between, based on my memory:
- When Ning Shu returns home on her first day, her family announces they'll disown her publicly and give her some money to buy an apartment. She starts worrying about her weakness compared to Ling Xue and decides to take martial arts classes.
- One day, she spots Ling Xue and follows her, witnessing her absorb a man's life force. Scared, Ning Shu hurries home, though Ling Xue doesn't discover her. Upon arrival, she finds the school doctor in her apartment, bleeding and holding a gun. She treats his wounds, but he醒了后要回了枪。
- Later, the school doctor gifts her a small gun. At Ling Xue's request, Ning Shu attends Leng Ao's birthday party, which leads to a tense confrontation where she ends up shooting Ling Xue. Ling Xue's energy barrier prevents her from moving, giving Ning Shu the chance to shoot her. Ling Xue escapes with her lover, who helps her regain her strength.
- The four characters eventually cross paths. Ling Xue's ML, the school doctor, and Ning Shu are armed, with the doctor holding a ticking bomb. Ning Shu persuades everyone to disarm, but the doctor detonates it. She and the doctor escape, but Ling Xue sustains injuries.
- Fearing Ling Xue, Ning Shu starts living at school (potentially earlier). Without her gun, she feels vulnerable and turns to the school doctor for help, receiving an address to a mysterious location. She discovers an underground shooting range and befriends its members to improve her defense skills. Initially, she struggles, but eventually manages to return to school, marking the approximate end of chapter 50.
The beginning of the story could have been more engaging if Ning Shu vocalized her criticisms of the original characters instead of just thinking them. Additionally, the afterstories of the alternate worlds don't follow immediately after each arc but come later. What I appreciate is that the novel doesn't focus solely on finding an ML, making it more about Ning Shu's反击 journey.
However, one major drawback is the open-ended conclusion that feels unresolved. The author leaves readers with numerous dangling threads, suggesting they may have lost interest in tying up loose ends. Key plot points, such as the aftermath of the darkness, the fate of the uncle, and the characters' resolutions, remain unaddressed. The story simply ends without providing definitive conclusions for any character.
For instance, there's no clarification on how the MC deals with life without an arm, the Cheongsam man's journey, or the state of their world and the World Tree. Many unanswered questions leave readers unsatisfied.
The narrative is straightforward, taking readers along with Ning Shu on her journey to different worlds and witnessing her complete her mission objectives. It offers a refreshing break from typical transmigration stories that revolve around revenge and love. Therefore, I highly recommend this novel for those seeking a more relaxing read to pass the time.
